    • The improved fuel assembly has a plurality of elongated corner posts extending longitudinally between and releasably and rigidly interconnecting top and bottom nozzles so as to form a rigid structural skeleton of the fuel assembly. Additionally, a plurality of transverse grids are supported at axially spaced locations along the corner posts and a plurality of fuel rods are supported by the grids. Certain groups of the fuel rods are spaced apart laterally from one another by a greater distance than the rest of the fuel rods so as to define a number of elongated channels extending between the top and bottom nozzles. A cluster assembly having a cluster plate with a plurality of elongated rods is adapted to be removably supported on the top nozzle with its rods extending through the channels. The rods can be a plurality of guide thimbles in the case of one cluster assembly, or a plurality of oversized fuel rods in the case of another cluster assembly. The provision of cluster assemblies allows a unique scheme for loading fuel in the reactor core. Cluster assemblies containing burnt fuel can be loaded into fuel assemblies containing fresh fuel and vice versa. Also, a guide fixture mounting guide rods and a pair of comb devices mounting locking bars are utilized to depress springs within the cells of the grids in order to load fuel rods into the grid cells without scratching their exterior surfaces.

    • A device for gripping and detaching a top nozzle subassembly from the upper end portions of the guide thimbles in a reconstitutable fuel assembly includes a central spider assembly disposable in overlying relation to an upper hold-down plate of the top nozzle subassembly, locating lugs arranged for insertion into coolant flow openings in the hold-down plate, collars interconnected to the spider and being disposed on the locating lugs and bearing on the hold-down plate when the locating lugs are inserted in the flow openings, and elongated studs received through and rotatable within respective central bores defined in the locating lugs. Upon rotation of the studs in one direction, compression of the hold-down springs disposed between the plates relieves the tension on the guide thimble upper end portions whereby the upper end portions are thereby prepared to be severed at locations immediately below the upper limit. After severing, rotation of the studs in the opposite direction allows the hold-down plate to be released from the unsevered guide thimble upper end portions at the upper limit. In case the hold-down plate does not release, positive release is obtained through the use of an impact-transmitting rod which is mounted in the central spider and attachable at its lower end to the hold-down plate.

    • An orientation device for properly orienting nuclear fuel rod end plugs (18) in their proper mode for ultimate use and processing includes a funnel (12) the inside diameter (d) of which is greater than the diameter (D) of each end plug (18), and the diameter (D) of each plug (18) is greater than the length (L) of each plug. The plugs (18) are permitted to pass through the funnel bore (30), however, only when the longitudinal axis of each plug is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the funnel bore (30) because the diagonal dimension (DG) of each plug as defined between any point on the plug's upper peripheral surface (26) and a point disposed diametrically opposite the first point upon the lower peripheral surface (28) is greater than the diameter (d) of the funnel bore. Each plug (18) also includes a large diameter portion (20) having the diametrical dimension D, and a smaller diameter portion (22), and in order to insure the ultimate proper orientation of each plug such that the smaller diameter portion (22) is disposed downwardly, the plugs (18) are pivoted 90.degree. by a deflector plate (38) and are transferred to a second re-orientation zone which includes a semicircular trough (36) and a rectangularly configured trough (42) having rails (44) defined within the sidewalls for supporting the plugs (18") in their correctly oriented vertical mode. The plugs (18") are discharged through a port (58) to a shuttle mechanism for subsequent processing.

    • An interactive system (10) for facilitating assembly of fuel rods into nuclear fuel assemblies having specific grid location requirements for the fuel rods, includes an operator work station (12) adapted for positioning between a supply of fuel rods and a fuel assembly loading magazine (22). Identifying data with each fuel rod is read by the operator with a manual scanner (24) for input and comparison by a computer (28) with the stored data for the particular fuel assembly to be assembled. The proper grid location for the fuel rod is then displayed on a screen (32) prompting the operator to insert the rod through a prompter/detector apparatus (36) mounted on one end of the magazine. In the preferred embodiment, the apparatus (36) includes a pair of motorized, slotted guide bars (54, 56) controlled by the computer (28) to intersect over the proper grid location for the particular fuel rod type. Sensors (92, 94, 95) are provided on the guide bars (54, 56) for automatically detecting insertion and verifying identification of the fuel rod loaded into the magazine through control logic in the computer (28). Alternate embodiments of the prompter/detector apparatus (110, 140 and 170) are disclosed to provide different degrees of prompting to assist the operator to insert each fuel rod in the proper grid location.

    • A system, for loading a group of elongated rods into a tray from a ramp, which includes a controllable rod stop located on the ramp, an air-tight envelope, and a tray positioning mechanism. The envelope has one end attached to the ramp's lower end and has a hole in its lower surface near the ramp's lower end. The envelope is stiff enough to self-inflate with air and to self-project its opposing end away from the ramp's lower end, when the envelope is left free. The tray positioning mechanism places the tray next to and under the envelope when the rods are to be loaded. When the rod stop is disengaged, the rods roll onto the envelope and are lowered into the tray as the weight of the rods push the air out of the envelope through its hole.
