    • Provided is an archival recording medium and a method for recording information on same. The recording medium comprises a coated microporous polymeric layer and an energy absorbing material, e.g., a layer of an energy-absorbing material such as a metal or dye/polymer layer deposited on the microporous layer. The coating on the microporous film layer is a polymeric coating, which polymer is of sufficient molecular size or branching to preclude entry of the polymer molecules into the pores of the microporous polymer film. If desired, further dimensional stability and mechanical strength can be provided to the recording medium by a thermally stable substrate or by tensioning the medium within a rigid frame.Information is recorded by the energy-absorbing material heating up in localized irradiated regions and causing the controlled collapse of the microporous structure in the microporous polymer layer. The collapsed portions of the structure constitute the information which can then be read either by reflectance or transmission. Due to the polymeric coating, the recording medium exhibits an enhanced signal to noise ratio upon the reading of the recorded information.

    • Color imaging apparatus is disclosed for forming a beam of light having three separate intensity modulated color components. The beam is line scanned across the surface of a photosensitive surface for recording. Three separate color component light modulating channels are provided. Each channel includes an electro-optic modulator responsive to a voltage signal for modulating the intensity of collimated light passing through it in accordance with the desired intensity of a color component. Dichroic mirrors separate the light from each channel into an intensity modulated color component. These intensity modulated color components are combined into a single beam which is line scanned across the surface of the photosensitive member.

    • A laser beam printer operatively responsive to a printing signal fed from a host control unit includes a printing unit for executing a xerographic process, a laser beam scanning unit, a fusing unit, a process control unit for controlling said printing unit, the laser beam scanning unit, and the fusing unit, and a signal processing unit for receiving the printing signal from the host control unit. When the host control unit begins to supply a printing signal to the signal processing unit, the signal processing unit supplies a provisional start signal to the process control unit. Upon receiving the provisional start signal, the process control unit controls the printing unit, the scanning unit, and the fusing unit to bring them into a ready state.

    • A dual mode laser printer utilizes a program-controlled microprocessor to switch between a high resolution, slow speed mode and a low resolution, high speed mode. In the printer a laser beam is modulated at a rate which is a first division of a system clock rate. This beam is caused to focus on a recording medium and, due to a rotating multi-faceted polygon, the beam sweeps across the medium. The medium is moved according to a second division of the system clock. By means of the microprocessor, the printer can be in either: (1) the high resolution mode in which the laser beam is modulated at a high rate due to the first divided signal and the medium moves at a slow rate due to the second divided signal, or (2) the low resolution mode in which the light beam is modulated at a lower rate due to the first divided signal and the medium moves at a faster rate due to the second divided signal.
