    • A machine for automatically producing a mattress border with handles sewn to the border material. Border material is pre-fed from a selected spool, screened for splice avoidance and measured. Handle material is fed from a selected spool mounted in a multiple handle material spool magazine mounted on rails, fed into a handle folding assembly, and cut to length. Ends of the handle material are folded under by the handle folding assembly and the handle then transferred in a folded condition from the handle folding assembly to a correct position on the border material. A double frame handle press holds each folded end of the handle material in place as each end is maneuvered under a sewing head needle to apply a stitch pattern to secure the folded ends to the border material. The double frame handle press is translated separately from the carriage assembly which travels in the sew pattern, to position the other end of the handle under the sewing needle.

    • A quilting method and apparatus in which ticking or facing material changes are effected, preferably under the control of a programmed computer or controller, by automatically retrieving, and preferably also splicing onto a web, selected materials from a facing material supply. The controller preferably also controls a quilter in the stitching of selected patterns along a web, and coordinates the positions of the patterns and material splices between the patterns, in response to measurements and calculations of dimensional changes between infeed webs, quilted tensioned web and cut untensioned panels. Storage compartments are provided for a variety of facing materials, preferably rolls thereof. A retrieval mechanism moves webs selected by the programmed controller to a feed position adjacent the quilter. Preferably, the storage compartments are moveable and suspended from an endless conveyor, and the retrieval mechanism also includes a two holder transfer arm that can exchange webs between the conveyor and a quilter feed position. In a fully automated embodiment, the transfer arm includes V-shaped troughs formed of moveable belts that unwind and rewind the ticking supply rolls.

    • A side-by-side material feed system is provided for feeding two dissimilar strips of material. The material is fed along parallel feed paths by first and second material feeders which move the material toward respective cutters. The operation of the feeders and the cutters is controlled by a programmable controller which permits each of the material strips to be fed and cut to form pieces of predetermined length which may be removed by an operator or conveyed to a subsequent station for further processing. In a further embodiment of the invention, the feeders are movable relative to a work station comprising a cutter associated with a common feed path extending between the cutter and a sewing apparatus. As each of the feeders is aligned with the work station, a predetermined length of material may be cut off by the cutter and conveyed along the common feed path to the sewing station.

    • Sheet material is taken from a supply, moved along its length to a cutting station, the sheet material is cut into segments, and the cut segments are moved parallel to their cut edges, the cut edges are hemmed, and the segments are folded. At the cutting station the leading portion of the sheet material is gripped and pulled from the entrance to the cutting station to the other side thereof, a slack bar is moved downwardly into the segment of sheet material in the cutting station to form slack in the segment, and the segment in the cutting station is clamped against parallel conveyor tapes. A cutting disc is drawn across the sheet material at the entrance to the cutting station, and the parallel conveyor tapes move the sheet parallel to its cut edges to a hemming station where the edges are folded and hemmed. The hems of the side edges are expanded after being mechanically formed and prior to being sewn. The leading and trailing edges of the folded portions of the hems are aligned with the leading and trailing edges of the unfolded portion of the hem as the segment approaches the sewing machine.
