    • Winnowing of shredded tobacco stem material, or other particulate tobacco material, is effected by metering the shredded stem material from a reservoir and then picking the metered flow to open and separate the particles one from another. The resulting stream of separated individual particles of shredded tobacco stem material is projected into an upwardly-flowing air stream to entrain a desired lighter fraction of the particles and carry it out of the separator device. The undesired heavy fraction falls in the separator device and is collected. The collected heavy fraction preferably is reprocessed to separate agglomerates of shredded stem material present in the heavy fraction into individual particles, which are then entrained in a second upwardly-flowing air stream which subsequently joins up with the first gas stream.

    • In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, a television camera is oriented with respect to a conveyor belt such that the direction of the scanning lines of the television camera are perpendicular to the direction of motion of the conveyor belt. Material containing foreign bodies is introduced on the conveyor belt and passes under the television camera and a light source. The television camera detects the reflected and/or radiant light and produces a video signal in accordance therewith. The image component of the video signal for each of the scanning lines is divided into signal portions. Like signal portions of respective scanning lines are successively integrated in an integration circuit to provide a non-zero signal when a foreign body is detected by the television camera. The output of the integration circuit is applied to a threshold switch, which produces a logical one when the value of the output of the integration circuit is equal to or exceeds an adjustable reference value. The outputs of the several threshold switches, each associated with an integrator and thereby with the like signal portions of the respective scanning line, are combined according to a logical OR operation in a logic circuit, the output of the logic circuit being used to drive a solenoid valve in order to reject material containing foreign bodies. The aforementioned apparatus and operation are repeated with at least one salient difference, the color of the conveyor belt, in order to enable removal of both light and dark foreign bodies.

    • A system and apparatus for grading and sorting tobacco leaves and other objects according to brightness and two color tones are provided. The tobacco leaves or objects are caused to traverse a background plate of known color and both are impinged by polychromatic light. The light reflected therefrom in three distinct spectral bands is detected and analyzed according to a predetermined mathematical relationship to compare the brightness and two color tones of the said leaves or objects to standards which are selectively dialed in to the apparatus. Logic circuitry is provided to constrain acceptance or rejection of the leaves or objects by the system in response to a determination that at least one of the characteristics of brightness and two color tones exceeds a predetermined deviation from the preset standards. One of the spectral bands is chosen to provide uniform reflectivity from the series of leaves or objects being sorted to normalize the size of the various objects to that of the background surface.

    • A system and apparatus for grading and sorting tobacco leaves and the like according to color and brightness are provided. The color of each tobacco leaf is compared photoelectrically with the color of a replaceable background color standard over which each leaf is conveyed. The system can be operated in either a normal mode, i.e., detecting and separating all those leaves darker than the background standard, or a reverse mode, i.e., detecting and separating all those leaves that are lighter than the background standard. A plurality of such systems are set to perform a series of sequential detections and separations, against a selected plurality of background color standards to effect separation of a plurality of tobacco leaves into a preselected number of grades or classifications. The system and apparatus can be embodied in a transducer unit for converting existing tobacco sorting machinery from a manual to an automatic sorting mode of operation. Two color detection of reflected light is used to determine brightness as well as greenness. A separate detector for each color is positioned behind a broad band color filter to sense reflected light from the tobacco leaves and the background standard. Either one or the sum of the resulting signals for each detected color is indicative of the brightness of the leaves while the difference between the signals is indicative of the greenness. A pneumatic reject mechanism is actuated in response to given leaf grade conditions, or a lack thereof, to separate undesired grades of leaves from the plurality of leaves being graded.
