    • An automatic transmission includes a gear transmission mechanism including first and second friction mechanisms which are alternatively engaged by alternative supply of first and second pressures thereto when the highest speed stage and the next to highest speed stage are alternatively engaged, and a torque converter including a lockup clutch. A transmission control system includes a pressure control system which controls the gear transmission mechanism by selectively supplying those pressures and possibly others thereto, a lockup clutch control valve which according to its switched position controls the engagement of the lockup clutch and which is switched to its engage position by a control pressure, and a lockup clutch interrupt valve, which selectively transmits the first pressure to the lockup clutch control valve as the control pressure, which is supplied with the second pressure which when present switches it positively to its non communicating condition, and which is also supplied with governor pressure which in the absence of the second pressure switches it to the communicating condition when this governor pressure is higher than a certain value, and otherwise leaves it in the non communicating condition.

    • An automatic transmission with overdrive in which a torque converter, an overdrive gear mechanism and an underdrive gear mechanism are separately segmented and are assembled or fastened together by simple devices, such as bolts. To enable this, the dimensions of these components which are associated with coupling portions thereof, such as inner and outer diameters, are designed for standarization. Accordingly, a torque converter and an underdrive gear mechanism of conventional type may be used requiring little or no modification. Additonally, the components are advantageously arranged with the overdrive gear mechanism positioned between the torque converter and the underdrive gear mechanism. The input shaft of the overdrive gear mechanism is splined to the output end of a shaft for the turbine vanes, and is positioned in axial alignment with the input shaft of the underdrive gear mechanism as well as with the shaft for the turbine vanes.

The above arrangement not only provides a change-speed gear system which has three forward-speed gear ratios and one reverse-speed ratio by selective actuation of the clutches and brakes, but also provides a change-speed gear system which allows the automatic transmission to be alternatively used in various types of vehicular drive systems such as front-engine and front-wheel drive and rear-engine and rear-wheel drive.
