    • Problems arise when using an Integrated Service Digital Network infrastructure (6) for providing Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line technology. These problems do not always occur but depend on the distance between the end-user location (12) and the central location (11), and the type of network termination (3), and result in the impossibility for the end-user to make voice calls or to send data. The problems are caused by the Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line splitters (4) and (7), which change the transmission characteristics of the Integrated Service Digital Network infrastructure (6) between the end-user location (12) and the central location (11). The transmission characteristics that are changed by the Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line splitters (4) and (7) are impedance, propagation time and insertion loss. The deviation is frequency-dependent and falls outside the internationally-defined ranges for these transmission characteristics.

    • A method and system are provided for determining the identity of computer peripheral devices that are coupled to a computer or network communication system in a daisy chain configuration. The computer includes a first switch. Each of the plurality of computer peripheral devices includes a bypass board having a second switch thereon. The method includes: (a) opening the first switch and the second switches; (b) closing the first switch; (c) detecting a short circuit formed between the computer and each one of the plurality of computer devices; and (d) identifying one of the peripheral computer devices which detects the short circuit as the first identified peripheral computer device. A method and system is also provided for sharing resources in a computer system, which includes a computer and peripheral computer devices.

    • Several connections (vcc1 . . . n) for transmitting multiple destination data (tv1 . . . n) are linked up with a decentralized distribution device (DSLAM, VERT) having several subscriber connections (TA1, 2), whereby at least one of the connections (vcc1 . . . n) can be selected using the distribution device (VERT), individually per subscriber connection, and multiple destination data (tv1 . . . n) transmitted by way of the selected connection (vcc1 . . . n) is sent to the respective subscriber connection (TA1, 2). Several additional connections (bcc1 . . . k) to a retrieval device (VOD), which makes the retrievable data (mov1 . . . z) available, are linked up to the distribution device (DSLAM, VERT). For each subscriber connection, at least one additional connection (bcc1 . . . k) is selected. After selection of the additional connection (bcc1 . . . k), at least part of the retrievable data (mov1 . . . k) is requested per individual subscriber connection, whereby the requested part of the retrievable data (mov1 . . . z) is sent from the retrieval device (VOD) to the requesting subscriber connection (TA1, 2) by way of the selected connection (bcc1 . . . k) and the distribution device (DSLAM, VERT). It is advantageous that the transmission resources available on the subscriber side can be assigned as needed, regardless of the type of service currently being requested, and can subsequently be released again.
