    • A magnetic tape reproducing apparatus and method is capable of reliably detecting the leading edge of a program to be reproduced without any malfunction even at the time of a high-speed search. During a 200-times normal speed high-speed search in the reproducing direction of a magnetic tape derived from the drive of a feed reel 14 and a take-up reel 15, a microcomputer 27 applies a brake to both reels in response to the detection of a start ID by a rotary head 11. From this detection of the start ID until the stop of the tape, reel pulses input from sensors 16 and 17 (from the rotation of the reels) are counted. After the tape comes to rest, the tape is compulsority rewound at a lower speed (10-times speed) dependent on the counted number of the pulses. After the completion of the compulsory rewinding, a 10-times speed rewinding follows with the lead edge of the start ID being detected, thereby eliminating an unstable contact condition which may be produced between the rotary head 11 and the magnetic tape 12 immediately after the stoppage of the tape, and presenting a more accurate detection of the start ID.

    • Disclosed are a magnetic recording and reproduction apparatus for a data processing unit, which includes a plurality of magnetic heads formed integrally by a thin-film forming technology, and a magnetic tape. A magnetic tape has a plurality of recording tracks corresponding to a plurality of independent data. The recording tracks are arranged in parallel to a moving direction of the magnetic tape and share the same starting position. A plurality of magnetic heads are arranged in parallel to a width direction of the magnetic tape to correspond to the recording tracks in a one-to-one correspondence, and are fixed at the starting position of the recording tracks. The magnetic tape is moved in a direction in which the starting position is away from the magnetic heads for data recording onto the magnetic tape and for data reproduction from the magnetic tape. Further, the magnetic tape is controlled to automatically and immediately move in an opposite direction to the previous direction until the starting position reaches the position of the magnetic heads in response to each of the end of the data recording and the end of the data reproduction. Thus, the starting position of the recording tracks is the same, i.e. at the position of magnetic heads upon the start of data recording and the start of data reproduction.

    • Information storage media, such as cassette tapes or laser discs adapted to be read by machines, such as cassette tape players or compact disc players, has some information stored thereon adapted to be played back at a first speed and other information stored thereon adapted to be played back at a second speed. The storage or playback characteristic of the information on the media will generally vary with the speed at which the information is adapted to be read and the information is divided between the two speeds based on such characteristics. The media may advantageously be used to provide full text readings of magazines, newspapers, books, etc., and to provide indexing for such full text readings. The full text readings are broken into separate informational items, such as the individual magazine or newspaper articles or book chapters, which are stored on the media to be read back at a slow speed while individual summaries of the separate information items are stored to be read back at a faster speed. The informational items and their summaries are arranged on the media so that an informational item may be accessed at the completion of the summary of such item.

    • An audio-visual system and method for generating video information in the form of lines of alpha-numeric characters, graphical and certain forms of animation information from recordings thereof together with audio information in the form of speech, music and other sounds associated with the visual or video information. Recordings of such two forms of information are provided on a record member, such as a magnetic tape disposed in a cartridge or cassette, which tape is driven at constant speed past a plurality of pickup transducers including one which is operable to reproduce the audio recordings from a first track of the tape and a second which is operable to reproduce digital video recordings of such lines of characters, graphical and animated cartoon information. In one form, the record member is driven at constant speed while audio recordings and digital video recordings are reproduced continuously from the tape. In another form, the tape is intermittently driven past reproduction transducers under the control of a timer to intermittently generate both audio and video digital signals which signals are recorded in a buffer, such as a rotating disc or drum or other form of memory from which such signals may be repeatedly reproduced at a rate whereby they may be utilized to generate still images on the screen of a cathode ray tube and/or images composed of still picture phenomena and moving phenomena. Where the record member is intermittently operated for reproducing therefrom, digital signals are reproduced at high speed and applied to a buffer memory from which they are reproduced at a lower speed in a manner to generate sounds of words accompanying the generation of video image information.

    • Apparatus is provided for the control of a video tape or cassette recorder by a microcomputer. The apparatus is interfaced to the video recorder for the input and output of various control signals via the remote control connector of the video recorder. The apparatus also includes interconnections to a microcomputer, a monitor and the audio and video signals of the video recorder. The apparatus under the control of the microcomputer controls operation of the video recorder and selectively supplies either video recorder video or microcomputer video to the monitor and independently supplies one of the two audio channels of the video recorder or no audio to the monitor. The apparatus under keyboard inputs from the microcomputer controls transport functions of the video recorder including rewind, fast forward, various play speeds, stop and pause. The apparatus also controls random access and presentation of addressable frame segments and locations of a video tape or cassette and maintains an accurate frame count throughout various transport functions with respect to an accurately defined starting point.
