    • A device for preventing fuel pump air ingestion in a diesel fuel system includes a diesel engine having a plurality of injectors. The injectors receive a supply of diesel fuel from a fuel injection pump at a high pressure. The fuel injection pump receives the supply of diesel fuel from a transfer pump at a transfer pressure through a transfer pressure gallery. The supply of diesel fuel is stored in a fuel tank coupled to the transfer pump through a fuel line. To prevent air from entering the diesel fuel system, a low pressure sensing switch is coupled to the transfer pressure gallery and senses the transfer pressure. When the transfer pressure drops below a predetermined pressure a controller disables the fuel injection pump. Once the transfer pressure rises above the predetermined pressure level the controller enables the fuel injection pump.

    • A fuel system and method for priming a diesel engine fuel system after assembly or when run out of fuel in which the system has a filter that can trap air allowing drainback of fuel to the tank. The system is provided with a fuel priming connection to the injection pump inlet, the connection having a closure for shutting the connection when not in use. A mechanically openable check valve, such as a Schraeder valve, is a preferred form of closure. The system is primed by reverse flow of fuel from the priming connection through the filter to the fuel tank to virtually eliminate trapped air from the system. The engine may then be started with a minimum of cranking. The engine may be restarted after running out of fuel by partially filling the tank and operating the normal feed pump while bleeding air from the system through the priming connection, which is closed prior to engine starting. The engine may then be reprimed after shutdown if required.

    • A fuel system has a fuel tank with a wall and a fuel delivery outlet through which fuel is delivered to the engine. The fuel tank has a fuel suction tube extending from the fuel delivery outlet into the fuel tank. Fuel is drawn to the engine from the fuel tank through the suction tube and the fuel delivery outlet. The fuel tank has a fuel cooling return inlet through which unused fuel warmed by the engine may be returned to the fuel tank and cooled. A fuel cooling conduit is coupled to the fuel cooling return inlet. The fuel cooling conduit has at least one fuel dispersing outlet through which fuel is dispersed onto the fuel tank wall to cool the fuel. A fuel warming return inlet is provided through which unused fuel warmed by the engine may be directed to flow adjacent the suction tube to heat the fuel being delivered through the suction tube to the engine. A shroud may also be provided to blend returning warm fuel with cooler fuel from the fuel tank that is flowing toward the suction tube.
