    • A stack of sheets arranged in an input stacker pass through a nip formed by cooperating feed rollers and stripper assemblies, which serve to separate sheets and feed them one at a time toward an acceleration assembly comprised of acceleration roller and cooperating idler means to form a gap between adjacent sheets for counting the sheets. The accelerated sheets are then fed into an output stacker. Belts couple drive from the accelerating drive rollers to accelerating driven rollers rotatable about an axis coaxial with the feed rollers and also cooperate with stationary guides to cause the sheets to experience some acceleration prior to reaching the acceleration nips. Resilient members cooperate with the feed roller to halt a sheet, in the event of an abrupt halt during normal operation to prevent the sheet from advancing to the acceleration nip. The use of closed loop belts as part of the acceleration apparatus enables the handling and counting sheets in a broader range of sheet length, while avoiding the need for increasing the size of the feed rollers.

    • A sheet material feeding apparatus has a circulating support board for carrying sheets from a sheet receiving station to a sheet delivering station. The apparatus consists of at least one support board and a first inclined board at the receiving station for supporting the sheets as tilted from the vertical in the order of supply with the first supplied sheet at the bottom, a second inclined board at the delivering station for supporting the sheets as tilted in the opposite direction from the vertical with the order of the sheets being upside down from that at the receiving station, and structure for moving the support board so as to follow a circulatory path starting from and returning to the receiving station via the delivering station. The sheets can be delivered one by one in the order of supply to the receiving station with no rubbing and resultant scratching of the surfaces of the sheets.

    • Apparatus for the conversion of a stream of partly overlapping sheets into a row of fully overlapping sheets has a first conveyor which transports a growing row of sheets at right angles to the planes of the sheets, and a composite second conveyor which defines a downwardly extending path wherein successive sheets of the stream descend onto the first conveyor to accumulate between spaced-apart distancing elements of the first conveyor. Successive sheets of the stream are engaged and pushed forwardly on the first conveyor by an oscillating pusher which, when retracted, provides room for descent of a sheet onto the first conveyor behind the rearmost sheet of the growing row. The amplitude and/or frequency and/or the end positions of the pusher are adjustable to account for variations in thickness and/or stiffness of sheets in successive streams and/or for differences in friction between the sheets and the second conveyor.

    • A stacking machine is proposed which is enabled to stack sheets or signatures being fed continuously either singly or in overlapped relationship, the machine comprising a rotatable roller partially encircled by a first set of belts. A second set of belts is movable facing the first set of belts along a portion thereof to define a passage for the sheets. The second set of belts is entrained by a free-wheeling clutch driven by the driving means which drives the roller. The belts are driven constantly, and a difference of speed with respect to the peripheral speed of the driving roller, as due to thickness variations of the sheets or signatures, is compensated for by the free-wheeling mechanism.
