    • A pallet assembling apparatus includes a fixture into which the pallet stringers and top and bottom slats are loaded manually, and a nailing station, including opposed pairs of top and bottom nailing guns equal in number to the number of stringers loaded in the fixture, for nailing the top and bottom slats to the top and bottom surfaces of each of the stringers. The fixture is movable along rails past the nailing station, and actuating bosses equal in number to the number of top and bottom slats in the fixture project from the fixture and trip proximity switches as the fixture moves through the nailing station to cause the nailing guns to be fired in unison as each slat passes by them, and a pickup carriage, positioned downstream of the nailing station, removes completed pallets from the fixture.

    • A machine for the assembly of frames, e.g. of timber, comprises a first static assembly (6), and a second assembly (8) mounted for longitudinal movement relative to the first assembly (6). The static assembly (6) comprises two adjustable side assemblies (16), and supporting assemblies, comprising support members (20, 22) providing parallel spaced supporting surfaces (23) on which elongate frame members (26) may be positioned. The moving assembly (8) carries clamping devices (60) each of which provides a datum surface, and an air cylinder to move the datum surface between operative and retracted positions, and a power operated clamp member to urge a transverse component (120) of the frame into engagement with the two datum surfaces. In the use of the machine, with the moving assembly (8) at a start position, parallel elongate frame members (26) are placed on the supporting surfaces (23), and a transverse frame member (120) is placed between the members (26), and the clamping devices (60) are operated to clamp the member (120) at a desired position, said clamping devices (60) operating from beneath the plane containing the longitudinal members (26) and the transverse member (120). Supplementary clamping members (112) are then operated to hold the longitudinal frame members (26) and the transverse frame member (120) in position, while fasteners (which may be in the form of nails) are applied by nailing guns (100). The clamping devices (60) are then withdrawn and the moving assembly (8) is moved lengthwise of the static assembly (6) and the abutment members (66) are moved to their operative positions to provide datum surfaces defining the position against which the second transverse member (120) of the frame is to be secured. The assembly (8) is thus moved stepwise lengthwise of the side members (26), stopping at intervals while transverse frame members (120) are nailed between the longitudinal members (26).

The automatic nailing utilizes nailing control in which a slat position sensor determines that a slat and underlying stringers are in position beneath a plurality of nail guns for nailing. The arrangement of slats and stringers are continuously moved by a conveyor as the nailing takes place. The slats and stringers are positioned on the conveyor automatically by controlled ejection of the same from slat and stringer magazines.

    • Portable apparatus for automatically constructing prefabricated stud walls or other frame structures from standard materials. Elongate studs are placed transversely at spaced intervals between a pair of elongate wall plate members by a reciprocatingly rotating stud-selecting mechanism and a linearly reciprocating spacer mechanism. As each stud is placed between the plate members, it is automatically nailed thereto, forming a portion of the wall frame, after which the completed portion of the frame is advanced an incremental distance along an assembly structure by the spacer mechanism, which pushes on the newly nailed stud to advance the frame to a position for nailing the next succeeding stud, and so forth in automatic cyclic fashion. A semi-automatic sheathing fastener mechanism includes a plurality of fastener guns and an automatically controlled actuation mechanism for placing fasteners at predetermined locations. Apparatus is provided for varying the spacing between wall plates and for reducing overall width of the apparatus for legal highway transport. The apparatus includes self-contained electrically-powered pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and fluid-operated control systems.

    • A cradle is mounted on a frame for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis between a start position and a discharge position. In the start position the pallet stringers are placed in the cradle and supported by upright guides including transverse, spaced guide bars. The stringers are clamped longitudinally. A first set of deck boards is placed across the stringers and fastened to them. The cradle is unlocked and rotated to the discharge position to thereby turn the partial pallet over. The other set of deck boards is then placed between longitudinal guide bars that had supported the stringers, and these deck boards are fastened to the stringers. The clamp is released, and the completed pallet falls under gravity free of the cradle which is then turned back to the start position for a new pallet.
