    • A method of processing an image includes the steps of separating an image into multiple color channels, and dividing the image into multiple zones, in which each zone includes a sub-array of pixels. The method then calculates a color shading profile for each zone. The color shading profile is calculated as a linear function, typically a straight line. If a linear function cannot be determined for that zone, the method interprets a function for that zone using the nearest zone neighbors. The method corrects the color shading using the functions calculated for the respective zones.

    • Image sensors having image sensor pixels with stacked photodiodes are provided. An image sensor pixel may include a shallow potential well located in a shallow implant region and a deep potential well located in a deep implant region. The shallow implant region and the deep implant region may be separated by a potential barrier. The image sensor pixel may have a given transfer gate to transfer charge from the shallow well to a floating diffusion node. The image sensor pixel may have an additional transfer gate to transfer charge from the deep well to the shallow well via a vertical transfer region located under the additional transfer gate. Image sensor pixels formed using this structure may exhibit higher pixel densities, higher image resolution, and higher sensitivity.

    • An image sensor has an array of pixels of different colors. The pixels may be arranged in a repeating pattern of eight pixels having four rows and two columns. During charge summing operations, the first and third rows may share a floating diffusion and the second and fourth rows may share a floating diffusion. When charge summing is inactive, transfer gates in the first and second columns may be controlled independently, while transfer gates in pairs of rows may be controlled simultaneously. When charge summing is active, summed charges from pixels of the same color in the first and third rows may be placed on the floating diffusion shared by the first and third rows and summed charges from pixels of the same color in the second and fourth rows may be placed on the floating diffusion shared by the second and fourth rows.

    • Methods for forming and attaching covers to microelectronic imaging units, packaging microelectronic imagers at the wafer level, and microelectronic imagers having covers that protect the image sensor are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method includes providing a first substrate having a plurality of covers, the covers including windows comprising regions of the first substrate and stand-offs projecting from the windows. The method continues by providing a second substrate having a plurality of microelectronic dies with image sensors, integrated circuits electrically coupled to the image sensors, and terminals electrically coupled to the integrated circuits. The method includes assembling the covers with corresponding dies so that the windows are aligned with corresponding image sensors and stand-offs contact corresponding dies inboard of the terminals and outboard of the image sensors. The first substrate is then cut to singulate the individual covers, after which the second substrate is cut to singulate individual imaging units.

    • A color image sensor has imaging elements each structured to form, at an image plane, an image of a subject having a respective magnification. Ones of the imaging elements forming respective ones of the images with the same magnification in light of mutually different colors constitute a set characterized by the magnification of the images.
