    • A girth monitoring belt includes a belt (12) and buckle (18) connected in series with a control enclosure (20). The control enclosure (20) includes a pair of springs (28) connected at one of their ends to the control enclosure (20) and connected at their other ends to an arm (34) which extends from within the enclosure (20) to outside the enclosure where it is connected to the belt (12). As a wearer's abdominal muscles expand, the springs (28) expand allowing the arm to slide along the enclosure (20). An electronic control circuit (38, 40) senses movement of the arm (34) past a predetermined set point which actuates an alarm (42, 43) indicating to the wearer of the undersirable condition so that the wearer will contract his muscles and allowing the springs (28) to contract moving the arm (34) within the predetermined set point turning off the alarm (42, 43). The predetermined set point is manually adjustable to vary the overall sensitivity to the amount of movement allowed.

    • A rain sensor for selectively supplying power from a constantly available power source to a wiper means (14) to remove moisture from a vehicle window (12) when moisture has collected. A passive circuit (18) is supported on the window (12) and has an initial self-resonant frequency to sense moisture. A generating means (20,120) creates an electromagnetic field having a range of frequencies wherein the initial self-resonant frequency is within the range of frequencies. An moisture collects about the passive circuit (18), the resonant frequency of the passive circuit (18) shifts away from the initial self-resonant frequency, indicative of less coupling with the generating means (20,20). A detector (28,128) detects the coupling between the passive circuit (18) and the generating means (20,120) to actuate the wiper means (14) by a control means (30,130) when a predetermined decoupling magnitude is exceeded.

    • A power control circuit (22) for selectively supplying power from a constantly available power source (20) to an amplified speaker (12) by sensing the existence of an audio signal in a differential stage by determining the differential potential signal between leads (16, 18) to produce a ground reference signal which is amplified by a transistor (28) and thereafter rectified (52) to provide a direct current signal which operates a relay driver transistor (42) which, in turn, operates a relay switch (46) to supply power to the speaker amplifier (14). The discontinuance of power to the speaker amplifier is delayed for a period of time after the discontinuance of the audio signal to the differential stage (24) by placing a capacitor (58) between the rectifier and the relay driver transistor (42) to power the relay driver transistor for a period of time after the audio signal is no longer being provided.

A band is positioned about the subject's chest or abdominal cavity to vary the resonant frequency of the LC circuit in response to the expansion and contraction of the subject's chest or abdominal cavity. A detecting means is also provided for detecting when the LC circuit is responsive to the electromagnetic field established by the oscillator. The claimed invention includes the passive circuit having a variable resonant frequency and force transfer means for transferring forces to the passive circuit to vary the resonant frequency. • An amplified microphone assembly for increasing the intelligibility of transmitted speech and including a microphone element, an audio amplifier, an auxiliary power supply and a push-to-talk switch. The microphone element converts an audio signal to an electrical signal while the audio amplifier amplifies the electrical signal. The auxiliary power supply supplies power to the audio amplifier when the push-to-talk switch is actuated, at which time an audio signal from the amplifier is sent to a radio transceiver. The power supply is chargeable and includes a charging circuit for charging the power supply. A connecting cable connects the microphone assembly to a transceiver and includes an audio lead and two push-to-talk leads which place the transceiver in the transmit mode when the push-to-talk switch is actuated. The charging circuit is connected across the push-to-talk leads and utilizes the voltage drop therebetween, as generated in the transceiver when the leads are not connected in the receive mode to, in turn, recharge the power supply. In the first embodiment of the invention the power supply includes a rechargeable battery and in the second embodiment of the invention the power supply includes a low-leakage high-capacity capacitor.

    • A method and apparatus for igniting the air-fuel mixture within a rotary combustion engine. A primary transformer core half and its primary winding are positioned in the upper cover plate of a Wankel rotary engine. Three spark plugs are electrically connected to their own secondary transformer core halves and secondary windings in a hollow rotor piston. The transformer core halves are arranged so that whenever the rotor is in correct position for ignition to occur (around T.D.C.) the primary transformer core half and one secondary transformer core half are in proper alignment for magnetic flux coupling between the two transformer core halves. When so coupled, high voltage necessary for spark plug firing is induced in the secondary winding whenever the primary winding is excited with an alternating current generated by a gated power oscillator. The high voltage induced in the secondary winding is permitted to form a spark across the spark plug gap as long as the primary winding is so excited and the transformer core halves are magnetically coupled.
