    • A control system for a plant is disclosed. According to this system, a value of a switching function which is defined as a linear function of a deviation between the output of the plant and a control target value, is calculated. A reaching mode input is calculated. The reaching mode input contributes to placing a deviation state quantity which is defined based on the deviation, onto a switching straight line on which the value of the switching function becomes zero. The reaching mode input is corrected according to the value of the switching function. A control input to the plant is calculated with a response specifying type control, and the control input includes the reaching mode input. The plant is controlled with the calculated control input.

    • An exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine having an exhaust system is disclosed. The control system may include an exhaust gas purifying device provided in the exhaust system and an oxygen concentration sensor provided downstream of the exhaust gas purifying device. The exhaust gas purifying device may include at least an oxygen storing ability or a nitrogen oxide storing ability. An air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture supplied to the engine may be enriched with respect to the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, so as to reduce the oxygen or nitrogen oxides stored in the exhaust gas purifying device. A predicted value of the output from the oxygen concentration sensor may be calculated using a predictor based on the fuzzy logic reasoning. The completion of the reduction of the oxygen or nitrogen oxides stored in said exhaust gas purifying device may be determined according to the predicted value.

    • A system for discriminating degradation of an exhaust purification system of an internal combustion engine having an adsorbent installed at a bypass exhaust gas passage branched from an exhaust pipe of the engine, which is opened by a switch-over valve at starting of the engine to introduce the exhaust gas such that the adsorbent adsorbs unburned HC in exhaust gas generated by the engine and is closed such that the adsorbent desorbs the adsorbed HC and the desorbed HC is thereafter recirculated at a position upstream of a catalyst. In the system, an inflow amount and outflow amount of HC flowing in and out of the adsorbent are determined based at least on the engine operating conditions and the detected concentration of HC. Then, the ratio therebetween is calculated and compared with a threshold value and if the ratio is less than the threshold value, the adsorbent is discriminated to be degraded, thereby enabling to improve the discrimination accurately.

    • A system for purifying exhaust gas generated by an internal combustion engine including a bypass branching out from the exhaust pipe downstream of a catalyst and merging to the exhaust pipe, an adsorber installed in the bypass, a bypass valve member which closes the bypass, and an EGR conduit connected to the bypass at one end and connected to the air intake system for recirculating the exhaust gas to the air intake system. The bypass valve member is opened for a period after engine startup to introduce the exhaust gas such that the adsorber installed in the bypass adsorbs the unburnt HC component in the exhaust gas. The adsorber adsorbs the HC component when the exhaust temperature rises and the adsorbed component is recirculated to the air intake system through the EGR conduit. In the system, the bypass valve is provided at or close to the branching point in the exhaust pipe and a chamber is provided close to the branching point such that the conduit is connected to the bypass at the one end in the chamber. The bypass valve member is combined with an exhaust pipe valve member as a combination valve such that when the bypass valve member closes the bypass, the exhaust pipe valve member opens the exhaust pipe. With the arrangement, the system can effectively prevent the exhaust pipe from being clogged even when a valve for closing a bypass is stuck in the closed position. At the same time, the system can provide a relatively short EGR conduit for recirculating unburnt HC component adsorbed from the adsorber and the adsorption and desorption are conducted optimally.
