    • A high speed slicing machine supports first and second food loaves for movement along parallel loaf paths into a slicing station where both loaves are sliced by one cyclically driven knife blade; the slices are stacked or shingled in groups on a receiving conveyor located below the slicing station. Independent loaf feed drives are provided; slices cut from one loaf may be thicker than slices from the other. The machine combines manual and automated mechanisms to load food loaves onto the food paths. These mechanisms share a central barrier that is used only during loading; at other times the barrier is clear of the loaf paths. The automated loaf loading mechanism has a sweep to push one or more loaves onto a support defining the loaf paths. There are two grippers, one on each loaf path; each grips the end of a loaf remote from the slicing station. For each gripper, a loaf feed drive impels the gripper (and loaf) toward the slicing station and then moves the gripper back to a home position, releasing an unsliced loaf butt on the way through a door opening in the loaf support. Each loaf feed drive includes two "short" conveyors driven at the same speed as the gripper. The loaf support is pivotally movable to a cleanup position; in its normal support position the loaf support masks the grippers, the loaf feed drive, the barrier, and the sweeps, but in cleanup position it exposes them all.

    • A mold plate assembly for a patty-forming apparatus includes a reciprocating mold plate having patty-forming cavities, with at least two rows of cavities aligned in a longitudinal direction, and a fill hole located rearwardly of the cavities. The assembly includes a bottom fill plate and a top fill plate structure arranged facing opposite sides of the mold plate. The mold plate reciprocates between a cavity fill position and a patty discharge or knock-out position. Outlet slots are arranged through the top fill plate structure to deliver food product into said mold cavities when the mold plate is in the fill position. During filling of food product into the cavities, a pressurized food product flow distribution path is established through the bottom fill plate, through the fill hole of the mold plate, through the top fill plate structure, through the outlet slots and into the cavities. The fill hole is reciprocated between an open and a closed position with the mold plate, to either allow food product into the mold cavities when the mold plate is in the fill position, or to prevent flow through the outlet slots when the mold plate is in the closed position. The mold plate assembly allows for the use of multiple rows of cavities in the mold plate and ensures consistent filling in both the rearward and forward rows of cavities.

    • A high speed food patty molding machine capable of handling whole-fiber food products has two food pumps, each pump having a cavity with an inlet at once end, an outlet at the other end, and a plunger movable through the cavity. The two pump cavities are located adjacent to each other and separated by a common wall; a moldable food product is supplied into the inlet of each pump cavity. A manifold connects the outlets of the two pump cavities to a molding mechanism; a pump drive reciprocates the pump plungers in overlapping alternation and a valve seals off the outlet of each pump cavity whenever the plunger of that pump is moving toward its retracted refill position, so that there is a continuous pressurized supply of food product to the molding mechanism. Each pump cavity outlet is located at the juncture of the cavities common separation wall and the discharge end of its cavity. The outlets merge to form a common inlet to center of the manifold. A rotary valve member in the manifold inlet is reciprocally rotated between one operating position in which one pump cavity outlet is closed and the other pump cavity outlet is opened and another operating position in which the pump cavity outlet conditions are reversed. the food product must make a greater change of direction to flow to the portion of the manifold closer to the open outlet than to the portion of the manifold farther away from that outlet.
