    • The present invention is to provide a multi-channel variable optical attenuator with a small size and a simple control circuitry, which requires a short time for adjusting the attenuation level of signal lights. The optical attenuator comprises an optical attenuating portion 10, a control circuitry 20 and a master control circuitry 21. The optical attenuating portion includes a plurality of optical waveguides 121-12N and a plurality of attenuation adjusting portions 131-13N, both of which is formed in a substrate 11. A signal light of a specific wavelength &lgr;i, which is derived from the wavelength multiplexed light, transmits in a respective waveguide 12i and is attenuated by a specific amount at the attenuation adjusting portion 13i. The control circuitry 20outputs a plurality of control signals 141-14N to attenuation adjusting portions 131-13N so that the attenuation in each optical waveguides 121-12N is varied by the specific amount to the master control 22 sent from the master control circuitry 21. Thus, optical output levels from waveguides 121-12N are equalized.

    • To measure noise level of a signal for upstream communication during bidirectional communication and to maintain a constant quality for the upstream signal, it is provided a bidirectional communication system between a center unit and terminals comprising: a reference pattern signal generator for generating a reference pattern signal; a level controller for controlling the transmission level of the reference pattern signal; a transmitter for transmitting a plurality of the reference pattern signals having different transmission levels to the center unit; a receiver, provided in the center unit, for receiving the reference pattern signals; a level measurer for measuring the reception levels of the received reference pattern signals; and a noise level determiner for determining a noise level in the reception levels in accordance with the measured result obtained by the level measurer. The level controller changes the transmission level of the reference pattern signals step by step. The noise level determiner determines, as a noise level, a level which is one step lower than the lowest reception level measurable by the level measurer.

    • A mixed liquid passage (31) is connected to a trapping passage (22) at a point upstream of a trap column (23). A mixture of a diluting liquid and an additive agent, which are respectively drawn and sent by pumps (35) and (36), is supplied into the mixed liquid passage (31). When an eluate containing a target compound is passed through the trap column (23), the eluate is diluted with the diluting liquid and hence its elution capability decreases, so that the target compound can be easily captured in the trap column (23). Meanwhile, the solubility of the mobile phase in the eluate decreases, causing not only the target component but also foreign compounds to more easily precipitate. However, their precipitation is prevented by the effect of the additive agent. Thus, clogging of the trap column (23) or pipes is prevented.
