    • A power-saving high performance data storage system provides for a substantial decrease in power consumption associated with spindle motor rotation during periods of data storage system idleness. A power-saving procedure is preferably executed by a microprocessor coupled to a controller and determines the optimum location to position the head and actuator above and/or below the surface of the data storage disks during idle periods. The power consumed or delivered to the spindle motor and actuator voice coil motor is determined at a plurality of head and actuator locations during the power-up sequence of the data storage system and after the system has reached a steady-state operating temperature. An interpolation procedure may be employed to increase the speed of the power-saving procedure.

    • When recording and/or reproducing data on a disk formatted in a constant linear velocity (CLV) system while the disk is rotated and a head is movable for scanning radially successive circular tracks thereon, and a recording and/or reproducing circuit is operable in response to a data transfer clock for causing the head to record and/or reproduce data in the tracks scanned thereby: the disk is virtually divided into a plurality of virtual zones each comprised of a respective plurality of the tracks; the frequency of the data transfer clock is determined in dependence on the one of the virtual zones in which the tracks being scanned are situated at least during the initiation of a recording or reproducing operation, with the frequency determined at the initiation of a recording or reproducing operation being increased step wise for each successive zone considered in the radially outward direction and being maintained substantially constant at least so long as the tracks being scanned are in the one of the zones at which the recording or reproducing operation was initiated; and the angular velocity at which the disk is rotated during the recording or reproducing of data in the tracks within any one of the virtual zones is decreased as successive tracks, considered in the radially outward direction, are scanned during the recording or reproducing operation in which the frequency of the data transfer clock is maintained substantially constant.

    • In a system for detecting a reference track on a disc for a disc storage unit, servo information for detecting an off-track amount of a position of a read/write head relative to the track is written on the disc surface. The servo information is formed by a repetition of simple patterns. A pattern of servo information for a reference track among those patterns is written at a frequency different from that for ordinary tracks. The write-in frequencies of the patterns for ordinary and reference tracks are discriminated from each other in accordance with the signals obtained by reading out the servo information written onto the tracks from the read/write head. When the write-in frequency for a reference track is discriminated, it is detected that the head is on the reference track. A reference track can be detected without having recourse to a particular sensor and a circuit attached thereto.

    • A reproducing apparatus is capable of performing special reproduction of information signals recorded on a rotary recording medium. The information signals are recorded in either spiral track turns or concentric tracks. The reproducing apparatus comprises a detector for generating a rotation detection signal having a frequency which varies proportionally to the rotational speed of the rotary recording medium. A special signal generator generates a special reproduction synchronizing signal and a generator generates an external control signal based on a signal which is obtained by variably controlling the frequency of the special reproduction synchronizing signal. A manual switch varies the frequency of the special reproduction synchronizing signal by controlling the control signal generator responsive to an output code signal corresponding to a position of the manual switch. The manual switch is positioned at a predetermined neutral position to produce the external control signal once every one rotation of the rotary recording medium, to repetitively reproduce the same track. The manual switch varies the frequency of the external control signal to vary, with predetermined steps, a speed of picture motion of the reproduced information signal, corresponding to positions of the manual switch.

    • A player, such as a video disc player, includes a signal pickup carriage, which carries a travel-limit switch and which is translated during playback toward the turntable center in correlation with the speed of rotation of the turntable. The player is provided with a movable endless belt, which carries a stop element and which extends along a path parallel to the carriage path. A time-setting wheel is coupled to the belt for selectively positioning the stop element. The position of the stop element determines the point at which the carriage-mounted switch engages the stop element during carriage translation toward the turntable center. The engagement between the two elements shuts off power to the turntable motor and lifts the stylus away from a turntable-supported record.

    • The present invention comprises an improvement in programmable phonograph record players which provide automatic sound track selection of the recorded portions of a record. The improvements comprise the provision of an optical scanner mounted on the tone arm including an incandescent light source for directing visible light onto the record surface and a photodetector for receiving light reflected by the record surface. In an alternate embodiment, a differential sensor system includes a light emitting diode and a pair of photodetectors for detecting the presence of a highly reflective, unrecorded land area between two successive recorded sound track portions of the record. In another embodiment, the scanner includes a pair of alternately illuminated light emitting diodes and a single photodetector for receiving the light energy, directed by the light emitting diodes onto the record surface, reflected toward the photodetector. An auxiliary tone arm lift and sweep mechanism is controlled by a digital logic system connected to the scanner to move the tone arm in a position to play a preselected number of sound track bands as dictated by a programmable memory.
