    • An output signal from a photodetector (3) responsive to light reflected at a phonograph record (2) is differentiated to produce positive and negative differential pulses (b.sub.1+, b.sub.1-), and the positive differential pulse (b.sub.1+) is retarded by a time length substantially equal to the time difference between the positive and negative differential pulses (b.sub.1+, b.sub.1-), while the negative differential pulse (b.sub.1-) is inverted to be a positive signal (d). The retarded signal (c) is added to the positive signal (d) so that the amplitude of the positive signal (d) becomes greater than before when the timing of the positive signal matches with the retarded signal (c). A resultant sum signal (e) produced in this way will be compared with a reference value (V.sub.TH1) to detect only unrecorded zones thereby accurately distinguishing unrecorded zones from recorded zones. The circuit arrangement therefore, comprises a differentiator (4), a circuit (D.sub.1, D.sub.2) for separating the positive differential pulse (b.sub.1+) from the negative differential pulse (b.sub.1-), a delay circuit (6), an inverting circuit (7), an adder (8), and a comparator (9).

    • A record disc playing apparatus comprises an address signal generating unit for generating address signals corresponding to horizontal rotational angular positions of a tone arm, a device for generating a rotational angular velocity signal corresponding to the rotational angular velocity of the tone arm, a circuit for controlling the rotation of a motor for driving a turntable, a control device supplied with the address signals and having a memory device from which is from which read out information corresponding to the addresses indicated by the address signals, and an attenuation circuit supplied with the rotational angular velocity signal and operating with an attenuation quantity, with respect to the rotational angular velocity signal, which quantity is varied by a signal from the control device. The rotational angular velocity signal corresponds to the quantity of any eccentricity of the record disc. The control device producing as output signals based on the information thus read out. The rotation of the motor is so controlled that a rotational irregularity due to any eccentricity of the record disc is corrected for.

    • A program selector for a record player of the type having a turntable supported on a movable carrier which is actuable to move the turntable into and out of a housing, and having a tone arm which is movable across the surface of a record and controllable to play back at least a selected one of plural programs recorded on the record in separate segments which are spaced apart from each other by respecting inter-program gaps. An inter-program gap detector detects the location of each inter-program gap on the record and produces an inter-program gap signal representing that location as the carrier moves the turn-table into the housing. A selector is provided for selecting a prgram to be played by selecting a particular inter-program gap signal which represents the location on the record of the desired program. A tone arm position detector detects the position of the tone arm as it moves across the surface of the record and produces a tone arm position signal representing the relative position of that tone arm. A control circuit compares the tone arm position signal to the selected inter-program gap signal and produces a control signal when the tone arm position signal corresponds to the selected inter-program gap signal so as to cause the tone arm to play back the selected program.

    • A record disc playing apparatus has a tone arm position detecting device which comprises a position detection part comprising a plurality of reading elements aligned in line, a code part comprising a plurality of rows of code patterns shifted in the direction of alignment of reading elements and extending along substantially perpendicular directions to the alignment direction of reading elements, and an encoder which is supplied with the output signal of the position detection part and produces address signals according to the relative position of the position detection part and the reading part. The position detection part relatively scans the code patterns of the code part, the code patterns have combinations of existence and non-existence portions in the alignment direction of the reading elements, the combinations are arranged differently according to the position of the relative scanning by the position detection part.

    • A device for detecting, on a record medium, positions of interband regions disposed between bands of recorded formation on the medium, detects differences in reflectivity of the regions and the bands by emitting electromagnetic radiation to be incident on a recorded surface of the medium containing the bands and regions, and detecting the level of the radiation reflected thereby. A radiation source, such as in LED, emits a beam of radiation to be incident on the medium. A detector, such as a photo transistor, detects the intensity of the beam reflected from the medium and provides an output level that varies with the intensity of the reflected beam. An interband region detecting circuit provides an output signal in response to variations in the output level to indicate the presence of the interband regions. In order to automatically control the current furnished to the radiation source so that the intensity of the reflected beam is maintained within an optimum range of the detector, an average level detecting circuit, which can include an integrator, provides a time average of the detector output to a current control circuit whose output is connected to the radiation source. Thus the emitted level of radiation from the source is automatically increased if the record medium has a low reflectivity, and is automatically decreased if the record medium has a high reflectivity.

    • A nonrecorded section detection sensor is driven to scan a disc surface to determine addresses of each nonrecorded portions provided between two adjacent tracks. A selection keyboard is provided for selecting a desired track or desired tracks to be played. A random access memory stores the addresses of the beginning portion and the ending portion of the selected track. A control means functions to locate a pickup cartridge at the address of the beginning portion of the selected track to perform the play operation. When the play operation is conducted to the address of the ending portion of the selected track, the pickup cartridge is driven to travel upward to terminate the play operation.
