    • A stack damper control arrangement for use in a heating system including a furnace having a fuel-fired burner apparatus and a vent stack for conducting combustion products away from the burner apparatus and a damper plate pivotally mounted within the stack and movable between a fully open and a fully closed position, includes a reversible drive motor which is energizable in response to a request for heat to drive the damper plate to the open position, a first limit switch operated when the damper plate reaches the open position to effect the deenergization of the motor, the motor being reenergized at the end of the heating cycle to drive the damper plate to the closed position, and a second limit switch operated when the damper plate reaches the closed position to effect the deenergization of the motor. The damper control arrangement is described with reference to a heating system including a gas fired burner and redundant gas valves wherein operation of a first one of the gas valves is effected through operation of the first limit switch and thus is conditional upon the damper being fully open, and wherein the supply of fuel to the second valve is conditional upon the operation of the first valve.

    • In the heating chamber of the furnace are a number of heat-absorbing elements which serve as a thermal storage, absorbing some of the heat which is developed during the regular burning cycle and then releasing such heat for additional heating effect. Stored heat is available for additional and therefore more efficient heating. A control system is used to conserve heat by selectively and automatically opening and closing the stack to prevent heat loss in timed relation with the burning cycle and adapted to provide sufficient purge time. The stack valve opens automatically at the commencement of a burning cycle and thereafter automatically closes after a purge interval. In the event of a power failure, the stack valve automatically closes and reopens when power is restored prior to the commencement of any succeeding burning operation.

    • An HVAC system has at least one variable speed controller for an AC induction motor, especially of the Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) type. The variable speed controller provides switched power via a modulating triac to the main coils of the motor and constant power via an on/off triac to the auxiliary coils during operation. A large value capacitor is placed in line with the auxiliary coils to reduce power consumption and current draw over that of known systems. Power to the motor can be turned off to provide for motor speed sensing through monitoring the frequency of a generated voltage when the power is turned off. Frequency-based motor speed sensing is accomplished by shutting off all current to the motor and measuring zero crossings on the generated voltage of the decaying magnetic field. The controller can be easily retrofitted onto existing motors. An optional controller bypass is provided to run the motor at rated speed in case of controller failure.

    • A gas fired furnace system (10) has a controller (14) controlling the supply of gas through a gas valve (12) and air for combustion by means of an induced air draft fan (28), ignition of the gas by means of ignitor (22), the delivery of heated air from a heat exchanger (20) by means of an air blower (34) in response to signals from a thermostat (42). A selected constant flow of air for combustion is provided by controlling the speed of the motor driving the induced motor fan (28) despite changes which may occur in back pressure. Induced draft fan motor parameters proportional to motor torque and motor speed are read on an ongoing basis and inputted to controller (14) which computes a desired voltage and compares that with referenced data stored in the controller memory and makes corrections to the speed of the induced draft fan motor to maintain the constant air flow. The motor speed and motor torque are also monitored to ensure that they are within selected limits indicative of safe operation and responsive to this input energization of a relay (KM1) is controlled to deenergize the gas valve and ignition.
