    • A combustion air regulating apparatus which is adapted for use with two stage induced draft furnaces and which allows such furnaces to be used with low cost AC inducer motors of the type having one or a small number of nominally fixed operating speeds. A flow restrictor assembly is disposed in fluidic series with the air intake and the exhaust vent to controllably restrict the flow of air through the burner box when the inducer motor operates at its low speed. A pressure sensing assembly is connected to sense a pressure approximately equal to that across the heat exchanger, and to control the flow resistance of the flow restrictor assembly to maintain a sufficient level of excess air when the furnace operates in its low stage. A solenoid valve responsive to the establishment of high stage furnace operation causes the flow restrictor assembly to establish and maintain its minimum flow resistance during operation in that stage.

    • Systems and methods for controlling a draft inducer for use with a furnace. The draft inducer includes a motor for driving a fan for inducing a draft in the furnace that causes a pressure drop across the heat exchanger of the furnace. A memory stores information including a table of predefined speed/torque values for defining a set of speed/torque curves for operating the motor. A pressure switch provides a pressure signal representative of a reference pressure across the heat exchanger and a processor determines the speed and torque of the motor when the pressure drop corresponds to the reference pressure. In response to the determined motor speed and motor torque, the processor retrieves a parameter defining at least one delta value from the memory. The processor adapts the predefined speed/torque values as a function of the delta value thereby to define the speed/torque curves corresponding to a desired pressure drop. A control circuit generates a motor control signal in response to the defined speed/torque curves to cause the motor to operate as a function of the determined motor speed and motor torque for controlling the draft induced in the combustion chamber.

    • Systems and methods for controlling a draft inducer for use with a furnace. The draft inducer includes a fan for moving combustion chamber gases for inducing a draft in the furnace combustion chamber that causes a pressure drop across a heat exchanger. The density of the gases flowing across the heat exchanger and the fan differs from a first operating state of the furnace to a second operating state of the furnace. A motor drives the fan in response to a motor control signal so that different motor speeds result as a function of the density of the gases flowing across the fan. A control circuit generates the motor control signal as a function of a first set of speed/torque curves until a speed signal indicates that the motor has reached a predetermined speed. After the speed signal indicates that the motor has reached the predetermined speed, the control circuit generates the motor control signal as a function of a second set of speed/torque curves. Thus, the motor will operate in accordance with the first speed/torque curves when the furnace is in the first operating state and in accordance with the second speed/torque curves when the furnace is in the second operating state.

    • A gas fired furnace system (10) has a controller (14) controlling the supply of gas through a gas valve (12) and air for combustion by means of an induced air draft fan (28), ignition of the gas by means of ignitor (22), the delivery of heated air from a heat exchanger (20) by means of an air blower (34) in response to signals from a thermostat (42). A selected constant flow of air for combustion is provided by controlling the speed of the motor driving the induced motor fan (28) despite changes which may occur in back pressure. Induced draft fan motor parameters proportional to motor torque and motor speed are read on an ongoing basis and inputted to controller (14) which computes a desired voltage and compares that with referenced data stored in the controller memory and makes corrections to the speed of the induced draft fan motor to maintain the constant air flow. The motor speed and motor torque are also monitored to ensure that they are within selected limits indicative of safe operation and responsive to this input energization of a relay (KM1) is controlled to deenergize the gas valve and ignition.

    • An improved power vent and associated control system for a heating apparatus such as a furnace. The invention utilizes a vent blower and a flow control orifice device permitting the use of a single size air moving device and motor with different size furnaces. The control is arranged to discontinue delivery of fuel to the furnace in the event of a blockage of the furnace flue or a failure of the air moving structure. In one form of the invention, a pressure condition is sensed downstream of the air moving structure to detect the failure conditions. In another form of the invention, the control utilizes structure to sense the speed of the air moving device. The invention comprehends the use of a motor for driving the air moving device which varies in speed substantially between the unloaded and loaded conditions. The air moving device preferably unloads under high discharge pressure conditions, such as by a blocked flue. In a preferred form of the invention, a closure closes the orifice during periods when the vent blower is not operating. The closure is responsive to fluid movement through the orifice to move automatically to an open condition.

    • A gas furnace employs an exhaust flue damper driven by an electric motor equipped with position indicating switches. A gas flow detector switch supported in the gas line has a vertical passage and a valve member gravity biased into a rest position in which it blocks gas flow through the passage. Fuel flow through the line creates a differential pressure on the valve, raising it above the rest position. Circuitry interconnecting the damper drive and position indicating switches and the gas flow switch with the furnace thermostat and the gas line control valve, positions the damper in a closed position when there is no gas flow to the furnace and in an open position otherwise and prevents energization of the gas flow valve when the damper is closed.

    • A control arrangement for a heating system including a furnace having a fuel-fired burner apparatus and a vent stack with a motor driven damper plate for opening and closing the stack, includes an interlock switch which provides a safety interlock between fuel supply valves of the system and first and second limit switches which control the energization of a drive motor for the damper plate and effect energization of the fuel supply valves of the system, permitting the fuel valves to operate only when the damper plate is in the open position and preventing energization of the fuel valves in the event of a malfunction of either of the limit switches. The interlock switch also permits recycling of the system in the event of a momentary power interruption. The control arrangement may include a stack mounted heat sensor switch which interrupts the energizing path for the fuel supply valves in the absence of heat from the main burner within a predetermined interval of time.

    • A flue damper to control the exhaust flow in a flue, wherein a flue damper plate is movable from an open position to a closed position by a solenoid operated plunger and returned from the closed position to the open position by a biasing spring. A damper arm actuates a normally-open limit switch closing the limit switch contacts. The limit switch is in series with normally open contacts of a thermostat, fuel valve, and power source, establishing a fuel system circuit. When the damper plate is in the closed position, the limit switch contacts are open and the fuel system circuit is broken. The plunger solenoid is connected in series with normally closed contacts of the thermostat, and power source, establishing an electrical circuit to close the damper plate. Thus, the circuit to close the damper plate and the fuel system circuit are mutually exclusive so that fuel may not be fired within the flue when the damper plate is closed.
