    • A sheet-holding-down member provided in a sheet feeding section of a printing press has a sheet-holding-down member that has a sheet-holding-down part that holds down from above an oncoming sheet to prevent a lateral edge of the sheet from being curled upward when the sheet abuts a lateral-edge abutment member. The sheet-holding-down member is pivotally movable about a roller support shaft so as to allow the sheet-holding-down part to be movable close to and away from an upper surface of a feeder board, on which the sheet is placed. An adjustment screw has a lower end that limits movement of the sheet-holding-down member so as to prevent the same from moving close to the upper surface of the feeder board as passing a predetermined height limit. The sheet-holding down member is urged downward by a coil spring. In a case where a sheet having a thickness larger than a predetermined thickness is used, the sheet-holding-down member is pivotally moved upward against the urging force of the coil spring, thereby allowing the sheet-holding-down part to move upward away from the upper surface of the feeder board.

    • A closed loop feedback method that continuously adjusts the lateral and skew position of a sheet includes a first sensor that is used to measure lateral sheet edge position. A second sensor measures the lateral sheet edge position at a certain distance from the first sensor. Sheet skew values can thus be calculated. Lateral and skew controllers provide outputs to lateral and skew actuators, respectively, to adjust the sheet position. A different method of registering sheets laterally and in skew enables active sheet deskew without translating the sheet in the cross-process direction. A sensor carriage position is controlled to find the sheet edge after which deskew control can start. The average value of the carriage position can then be fed in a feedforward manner to move the image location to match the average paper position. This achieves good average lateral registration and active skew control at a reduced cost.

    • This invention concerns a feeding and advancing apparatus in a document processing machine for aligning and registering flat articles against a registration wall. The articles are advanced through a first feeding apparatus that pushes them towards a registration wall, and a second feeding apparatus advances them along a second direction substantially orthogonal in relationship to the first feeding apparatus when a registration sensing system causes the second drive system to engage the articles. If there is not registration of the articles at the registration wall, the first feeding apparatus will re-establish the prior registration condition when the second feeding apparatus is disengaged. Then, the first feeding apparatus will re-establish registration. Once the articles are re-registered, the second feeding apparatus will be engaged to continue advancing the articles along the second direction to the desired downstream location.
