    • A sheet discharge mechanism according to an embodiment includes a tray with a loading surface on which discharged sheets are loaded. An alignment plate extends from a downstream side of the loading surface in a sheet discharge direction. An alignment roller contacts an uppermost sheet loaded on the loading surface at a predetermined position, and rotates while contacting the uppermost sheet to align the sheets against the alignment plate. A support mechanism elastically supports the tray so that at least a portion of the tray around the predetermined position moves downward in accordance with an increase in weight of sheets loaded on the loading surface. A height adjustment mechanism maintains a minimum height of sheets when the portion of the tray around the predetermined position moves downward by a predetermined distance or more in accordance with the increase in weight of sheets loaded on the loading surface.

    • An apparatus and method are disclosed for stacking items of media in a container region. The apparatus includes at least one rotatable element, each having an outer surface and an opposed claw element for releasably clamping an item of media to the outer surface of the rotatable element for rotation therewith. The apparatus also includes a driven roller element for locating an item of media released by the claw element into a stack position. The apparatus also includes a support platform element biased towards the roller element to compress items of media located in the stack position between the platform element and the roller element.

    • A media storage bin including a floor and a pair of spaced apart walls specifically spaced to receive pieces of media and to retain the pieces of media in a stacked condition. A drop control flap is mounted to an individual one of the spaced walls for delaying the fall of a piece of media into the bin. This wall includes a top surface. A platform for supporting a stack of pieces of media is disposed in the bin, between the wall top surface and the floor. A helical spring is disposed between the platform and the floor for maintaining the top of the media stack at a predetermined distance from the wall top surface to provide thereby a constant fall distance between an individual one of the pieces of media and the wall top surface. This is accomplished in a manner whereby the spring rate enables the platform to drop the thickness of one piece of media for each piece of media added to the top of the stack.
