    • A process and apparatus for programming the wall thickness of thermoplastic parison extrusions for subsequent conversion to blow-molded plastic articles. The apparatus for forming the parison includes a mandrel or core pin and a die assembly wherein the mandrel is made from a material having predictable and repeatable elastic properties and has enclosed therein a piston and piston rod. The piston rod extends the full length of the mandrel and is connected to the piston on the rod''s opposite end. The piston is contained in a chamber that is connected to a hydraulic fluid source. The wall thickness of the formed parison is changed by varying the size of the extrusion orifice through expansion or contraction of the mandrel produced by the application of release of hydraulic pressure on the top of the piston. The die assembly is particularly suited for extrusion of parisons from heat sensitive thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride since no sliding surfaces are utilized which are known to trap and cause degradation of heat sensitive thermal plastics.

    • Torque equalizing mechanism for uniformly actuating the die cores of a double parison extrusion head on a vertical ''''wheeltype'''' blow-molding machine and uniformly varying the wall thickness of a pair of parisons simultaneously extruded from the head. A single programming means governs operation of the actuating mechanism. Die cores, extending upwardly from the double extrusion head, are engaged by rocker arms fixed on a rotatably mounted tubular shaft section of a composite shaft having a driver rod fixed internally thereof at a localized central attachment area equidistant from the die core centers. The rod extends from one end of the tube and a crank arm on the outer end of the rod is pivotally linked to a control shaft movable in response to the single programming means. The composite tubular shaft arrangement applies motion to the die cores equally and requires a minimum of head space from a double parison die head, thus facilitating the conversion of existing single parison machine designs to double the output thereof.

IN ONE FORM, ELECTRICALLY INSULATING MATERIAL IS EXTRUDED IN SITU ON AN ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR SUCH AS A WIRE, STRIP OF METAL OR SERIES OF THESE ELEMENTS TO FORM A PROTECTIVE INSULATING SHEATHING THEREIN AND TOOLING IS PROVIDED TO VARY THE THICKNESS OF THE EXTRUSION MATERIAL ALONG PREDETERMINED PORTIONS OF THE LENGTH OF THE COMPOSITE ARTICLE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE TOOLING MAY BE OPERATIVE TO EITHER COMPLETELY STOP THE FLOW OF INSULATING MATERIAL OR SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCE SAME ALONG PREDETERMINED PORTIONS OF THE LENGTH OF THE ELONGATED MEMBER TO EITHER BARE SAID SECTIONS OF INSULATING MATERIAL OR PROVE SUCH LITTLE INSULATING MATERIAL THEREON THAT THE POST-OPERATIVE REQUIREMENTS FOR STRIPPING INSULATING MATERIAL IN ORDER TO CONNECT THE ENDS OF THE

      ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR TO TERMINALS OR FURTHER CONDUCTING ELEMENTS, WILL BE ELIMINATED, IF NOT GREATLY SIMPLIFIED. A FURTHER ADVANTAGE TO BE DERIVED IS THAT THE USUAL WASTE ENCOUNTERED IN STRIPPING OR BARING THE ENDS OF WIRES AND CABLES WILL BE ELIMINATED, IF NOT SUBSTANTIALLY ELIMINATED. IN ANOTHER FORM OF THE INVENTION, AN ELONGATED MEMBER SUCH AS A FINITE SECTION OF WIRE, ROD OR TUBE IS PASSED THROUGH AN EXTRUSION DIE AND PREDETERMINATELY COATED ON ITS OUTSIDE SURFACE WITH EXTRUSION MATERIAL BY AUTOMATERIALLY CONTROLLING THE FLOW OF SAID EXTRUSION MATERIAL TO OCCUR ONLY WHEN THE ELONGATED MEMBER IS PASSING THROUGH THE DIE AND TO BE IMMEDIATELY TERMINATED UPON REMOVING THE ELONGATED MEMBER FROM THE DIE.
