    • A system for tensioning stranded or wire cables in prestressed concrete comprises an anchoring head having holes in which are anchored the strands or wires. The anchoring head has a ring in screw-threaded engagement with an exterior surface of the head for providing a reactive support for the anchoring head. An intermediate member is releasably fixed to the anchoring head by rods which extend through holes in the intermediate member and are in screw-threaded engagement with the anchoring head. The intermediate member also has a screw-threaded exterior for engagement with the ring to allow the ring to provide a reactive support for the intermediate member at intermediate stages in a tensioning operation.The intermediate member is releasably connectable to a tensioning jack thus allowing the jack and the intermediate member to be removed from the anchoring head once tensioning is complete.

    • In order to reduce the time required for refueling a nuclear reactor, the studs utilized for securing the head of the reactor pressure vessel are provided with modified breechblock threads at their lower ends, and also at their upper ends. After being detensioned, the studs are rotated 60* for disengagement from corresponding threads in a flange at the top of the pressure vessel and are lifted out of the stud holes when the head is removed. The studs are tensioned and detensioned by a plurality of portable hydraulic stud tensioning devices or tensioners which are attached to the upper ends of the studs by the modified breechblock threads at the upper ends of the studs. The tensioners are carried by a separate hoist system mounted on the closure head for the vessel.

    • A self-straining bolt includes a shank and a rod of steel or like stiff rigid material which fits with clearance in an axial bore within the shank of the bolt, the bore being closed at one end. A closed cylindrical chamber is secured to the end of the bolt remote from the closed end of the bore, and a piston member which has an overall diameter greater than that of the bore, is fitted in the chamber. The piston member is a close sliding fit in the cylindrical chamber and engages the end of the rod adjacent the chamber. A disc of a resilient material with a hardness in the range of Shore hardness 10 to 100, and preferably 40 to 70, and a thickness of at least 3/8 inch, and preferably at least 1/2 inch, abut the working face of the piston and bears with its periphery against the cylindrical wall of the chamber so as to form a seal. A conduit extends through the wall of the chamber for connecting the chamber to a source of fluid under pressure whereby a pressure can be applied to the piston through the disc to cause the rod to press against the closed end of the bore and strain the shank of the bolt. The disc prevents fluid leaking from the chamber through the space between the piston and the cylindrical wall of the chamber.

    • Apparatus securing a locking bolt of a pressure head to a reactor pressure vessel in which the pressure head flange is urged in one direction and the bolt is tensioned in an opposite direction to reduce the interfacing force between confronting walls of a nut securing the locking bolt and the pressure head flange, while an operator tightens the nut against the pressure head flange. For tensioning the bolt, a cylindrical force transmitting member has its lower end threaded for engagement with the locking bolt and it upper end threaded, but without any pitch, to receive in threaded engagement a puller or lifter rod similarly threaded. The force transmitting member is split axially so that its halves can be displaced radially to facilitate the retaining of the lifter rod in threaded engagement therewith, while rotating the force transmitting member for adjustable threaded engagement with the locking bolt without rotating the puller rod. Axially movable retaining sleeves surround the split force transmitting member for at times to permit separation thereof to retain the lifted rod in threaded engagement therewith while rotating the force transmitting member for adjustable threaded engagement with the locking bolt without rotating the puller rod, and at other times securing the force transmitting member in locking engagement with the lifter rod for movement therewith. For urging the flange in the one direction a force is transmitted through columns and a connector sleeve for application to the pressure head flange. A suitable hydraulic system with pistons initiates the transmitted forces in each direction.
