Within the framework of the invention, there is the alternative option that fluctuations of the application parameters and, based thereon, variations of the spray jet width are taken into account by means of an adaptation of the path spacing (d) between the adjacent coating agent paths for the purpose of keeping the path overlapping constant. Furthermore, the invention comprises a corresponding coating apparatus.

    • An improved powder atomizer comprising a cylindrical pan, a cylindrical resiliently deformable element, which is journaled for rotation about an axis within the pan. The pan is mounted coaxially of the element. The element and pan define a cylindrically shaped venturi therebetween into which powder is fed. The venturi has an inlet and outlet radially spaced apart. Structure is provided for rotating the element within the pan at speeds in excess of that required to throw the powder from the element by centrifugal force. The element draws ambient air through the venturi and atomizes and deagglomerates powder fed into the venturi inlet thereby forming a uniformly flowing cloud of particulate material which is uniform both longitudinally and laterally of said axis. The invention also provides an atomizer feeder and an atomizer feeder combination deagglomerator combination with a feeder such a disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,314,090 which is particularly useful in wide web coating applications to produce a particulate cloud which is uniform both laterally and longitudinally of the web and uniform in both particulate distribution and particulate size throughout the uniformly flowing cloud.

    • An emulsion of a disperse phase liquid in a continuous phase liquid is produced by atomizing the disperse phase liquid electrostatically and entraining the atomized droplets in a moving layer of continuous phase liquid. To produce a spray with atomized droplets of small and uniform size a disperse phase liquid, such as wax in a solvent, is directed to flow over the sharp edge of a blade maintained at a high voltage with respect to the conductive surface of the drum. The drum is rotated so that the surface is wetted by a reservoir of continuous phase liquid and so that the surface layer of liquid intercepts the spray of droplets at a uniform rate to produce an emulsion of consistent concentration. The concentration is controlled by setting the rates of flow and the number of cycles of interception.

    • An electrostatic hand-held coating-dispensing apparatus includes a first pulley, a second pulley, and a continuous belt trained about the first and second pulleys. The first and second pulleys are supported and retained in spaced apart relation to maintain tension on the belt in a supporting housing. A first brush is provided adjacent the belt where the belt is trained about the first pulley. A second brush is provided adjacent the belt where the belt is trained about the second pulley. A curved conducting surface is also supported by the housing. The second brush is connected to the conducting surface. A small alternating current electric motor is provided for turning the first pulley. A container or canister is provided for the coating material. The canister is snugly received in the supporting housing in a position adjacent the conducting surface. The canister includes an end for transferring electrostatic potential from the curved surface to the coating material therein.
