    • A multispeed winch or gear box wherein an axially-movable gear located on a shaft parallel to the drive shaft is movable by operation of a lift mechanism to be in a first position in engagement with a specific gear train or in a second position out of engagement with the said gear train. Further, the winch or gear box can have a gear on the drive shaft with a lip or shoulder which can retain the axially-movable gear in the upper or first position after the lift mechanism has moved the axially movable gear to the first position, and the lift mechanism has been withdrawn. This arrangement will permit the gear box or winch to automatically shift from first speed to second speed to third speed upon reversal of the drive shaft rotation.

    • A device for transmitting torque between a shaft (1) and an outer annular element (2), in which device the transmission ratio between the shaft and the annular element is determined by the load on the ring. The device comprises at least one eccentric device (5) arranged for rotation with the shaft, and at least one rocker arm (7) which can be activated by the eccentric device and which is provided with an engaging means (11). The engaging means are arranged to be brought into driving contact with the annular ring (2) encircling the shaft (1), by movement of the said at least one rocker arm. The eccentric device (5) is so designed that its effective length varies in dependence on the load required to activate the rocker arm (7). The device can be used to advantage in winches, for example sheet winches on sailing boats.

    • A manually powered multi-speed winch has an automatic drive disengagement upon drive reversal which is provided by an axially movable member in one drive train which in a first axial position is engageable for drive transmission through a pawl and ratchet unidirectional drive means. The drive means in its drive-transmitting condition prevents movement of the member away from that first position. Upon drive reversal the unidirectional drive means is ineffective either to transmit drive or to maintain the member in its first position and it moves axially to a second position in which the drive means are disengaged. The member is biased towards that second axial position but is manually movable to the first by a control button accessible at the outside of the winch. The button may be lockable to override the automatic disengagement.

    • A deck winch provides three separate speed ratios for its drum when its main shaft is turned. With an external control lever in a neutral position a high speed ratio is attained by rotation of the main shaft in a first direction, resulting in a low drum speed. A medium speed ratio is attained by rotation of the main shaft in a second, opposite direction. With the control lever in its active or low gear ratio position, rotation of the main shaft in the first direction moves the drum at its highest speed relative to the main shaft. When the control lever is in this active position and the main shaft is rotated in the second direction, the control lever is automatically shifted to its neutral position and the medium speed ratio is established. The control lever is connected internally to engage and disengage an idler gear that mechanically interconnects the main shaft with one or several driving gears for the drum. At any time the position of the control lever and the direction of main shaft rotation may be selected to provide any of the three speed ratios.

    • A drive transmission having a drive shaft and means for rotating the shaft. Spaced dogs are rotated by the shaft and these dogs are biased in a direction substantially inwardly of the axis of rotation of the shaft. The amount of force required to rotate the shaft can be varied. In one embodiment, this may be accomplished by a cam member rotated by the shaft engaging rollers on the dogs, which rollers have tapered surfaces engaging varying irregular surfaces on the cam member. In another embodiment, this may be accomplished by having the cam member rotated directly by the shaft engaging spaced balls mounted in a race housing, the balls being movable in a direction parallel to and at right angles to the axis of rotation of the shaft.

    • The invention provides a marine winch driven by a central operating spindle coupled at its lower end to drive reduction gearing in turn coupled to an outer casing of the winch to rotate said casing at one of two alternative output ratios selectable on rotating the operating spindle in opposite directions. The operating spindle has a separate upper portion movable vertically relative to a lower portion and in splined driving engagement therewith. When the upper part of the operating spindle is lowered it is coupled directly to drive the outer casing so as to provide a third, 1:1, output ratio. Unidirectional stepless clutch means are provided in the drive lines to enable the three output ratios to be acheived and also to enable the outer casing to over run.

    • This invention relates to a marine winch for hauling sheets, lifts, halyards and analogous tackle. The invention provides a winch having a circular main casing adapted to be fixed to a deck, a winch drum rotatable about the axis of an upper generally cylindrical turret of said casing, first unidirectional clutch means operatively located between the drum and the turret and permitting relative rotation between the drum and the turret in one direction only; a circular sub-casing having an upper sleeve portion extending through and coaxial with said turret, said sub-casing being rotatable about the axis of the turret, second unidirectional clutch means operatively located between the sleeve and the drum and permitting relative rotation between said sleeve and said from in one direction of rotation only, an operating spindle located axially of the turret and rotatable relative thereto, gearing adapted to transmit drive from said operating spindle to a flared circular lower part of said rotatable sub-casing, said gearing including two output gear wheels engaging diametrally opposite regions of a toothed ring formed within said flared circular lower portion of said rotatable sub-casing. Preferably the gearing is arranged to drive the output gear wheels in two ratios of say 3.5 : 1 and 11 : 1 selectable on rotating the operating spindle in opposite directions.
