    • A self-tailing arrangement for a winch comprises a rope guide channel defined by upper and lower guide rings which are rotatable with a drum and adapted to grip rope therein. A feeder arm guides rope between the drum and the rope guide channel and is fixed with respect to a support. A spring-mounted retainer guide guides rope between the rope guide channel and an unloaded end of the rope. The drum is rotatable with respect to the retainer guide. The retainer guide has a retainer lip extending partially circumferentially around the self-tailing assembly to at least partially enclose a portion of the rope guide channel. The retainer guide further defines at least one side of an opening adjacent the retainer lip, the opening being sized to conduct rope through the opening during reverse winding of the winch, the rope thereby being retained in the rope guide channel by the retainer lip.

    • A winch for a sailboat comprises a support for mounting the winch with respect to a sailboat, a winch drum rotatable with respect to the support, a manual drive socket for receiving a crank handle for manual driving of the winch and a motor for powered driving of the winch. The winch provides at least two manual forward winding gearing ratios selectable according to the direction of rotation of the manual drive socket. Motor-operated forward and reverse winding can be provided. The winch can lock against reverse winding when the crank handle is located in the drive socket. Control means are provided for controlling the motor. The control means has two selectable on-off controls only, a forwards control being exclusively for controlling on-off motor-operated forward winding of the winch drum and a reverse control being exclusively for controlling on-off motor-operated reverse winding of the winch drum.

    • By modern gears for electric/hydraulic and manually driven sheet winches, demands are made on the presence of a free-wheeling mechanism (24) in case that the drive unit fails, and it is also desirable that the gear takes up as little space as possible, irrespectively whether it is placed on deck or below on a boat. Thus there is indicated a gear of the kind indicated which is peculiar in that the planet carrier (22) is suspended on roller/ball bearings disposed farther away from the center axis (12) of the planet carrier than the free-wheeling mechanism (24). This design enables reducing installation dimensions for the gear, as the normally used central shaft may be omitted and the space can be utilised for placing the free-wheeling mechanism (24).

    • For some powered drum winches, e.g. in sailing boats, it is desirable that the drum can be driven with two different speeds. Basically, this is no technical problem, but it has been difficult to achieve both a high efficiency and a simple construction. It has been proposed that with the use of a plural shaft gear an advantageous result is obtainable in making the gear drive the drum with two different speeds based on a reversible driving motor being driven in one or the opposite direction. This control principle is also used in the present connection in which, however, it is disclosed how the relevant gear can be designed in a compact and inexpensive manner about only a single gear shaft.

    • The features of a known auto shifting three speed winch having a drive shaft and rotatable drum are used to provide first, third and fourth gears upon reversal of rotation of the drive shaft. The third and fourth gears use common gearing and the final gear meshed with the drum. A separate drive train is provided for second gear and includes planetary gears having carriers secured to the drum and operating between a sun gear on the shaft and an outer ring gear. Second gear is selected by means of pawls brought into engagement with a ratchet track on the ring gear, with the pawls being connected to torsion springs controlled manually by a lever arrangement. When second gear is engaged, the winch can shift between only second and third, with fourth being overridden.

    • A manually powered winch has two geared drive trains. Both originate from a simple set of gear teeth (7) formed into the diameter of a drive input shaft (5). The final drive, common to both gear trains, to an internal gear track (18) on the drum (3) of the winch is one part (12) of a two-part gear (8,12).
