    • An apparatus (10) comprises a pressure vessel (16) and an initiator assembly (18). The pressure vessel (16) defines first and second chambers (20, 22). A first combustible mixture in the first chamber (20) includes fuel gas at a first volume percentage. A second combustible mixture of gases in the second chamber (22) includes fuel gas at a second, greater volume percentage. The initiator assembly (18) includes a first igniter (26) which is actuatable to ignite the first combustible mixture. The initiator assembly (18) further includes a second igniter (28) which is actuatable to ignite the second combustible mixture. A controller (30) actuates the initiator assembly (18) in a selected one of a plurality of differing stages corresponding to a plurality of differing conditions. The differing stages of actuation include a stage in which the first igniter (26) is actuated and the second igniter (28) is not actuated.

    • An inflator for generating gas to inflate an air bag in a vehicle occupant safety apparatus comprises gas generating material, a plurality of filter layers, and a strand extending around the filter layers. The gas generating material generates gas when ignited. The filter layers filter the gas as it flows through the filter layers, and encircle the gas generating material. The filter layers include an outer layer with a cylindrical outer surface. The strand extends around the cylindrical outer surface of the outer filter layer at least partially in a helix, and has a plurality of circumferentially extending turns. The turns in the strand are spaced apart axially to define a helical gap which permits the gas to move from the cylindrical outer surface past the strand toward the air bag.

An ignitable material (122), when burning, ignites the combustible mixture of gases in the storage chamber (18). The storage chamber (18) has an axis (61), first and second opposite ends which are spaced from each other a distance along the axis (61), and a substantially circular cross sectional shape at all locations along the axis (61). The storage chamber (18) has a shape such that the ratio of the distance between the opposite ends of the storage chamber (18) to the greatest cross sectional diameter of the storage chamber (18) is within the range of 0.75-1.25.

    • A vehicle occupant protection apparatus (10) comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (12) and an inflation fluid source (18). The apparatus (10) includes a structure (14) having a vent opening (50) for directing inflation fluid away from the inflatable device (12). The apparatus (10) also includes a member (60) movable between a closed condition closing the vent opening (50) and an open condition enabling flow of inflation fluid (14) through the vent opening. The apparatus (10) includes an electrically energizable mechanism (70) to move the member (60) from the closed condition to the open condition to vent inflation fluid through the vent opening (50). The mechanism (70) can also move the member (60) from the open condition to the closed condition to inhibit venting of inflation fluid through the vent opening (50).

    • A vehicle occupant protection apparatus (10) comprises a steering column (18) of a vehicle (12) and a vehicle steering wheel (14). The steering wheel (14) comprises a hub (16), a rim (22), and at least one spoke (24) extending from the hub to the rim. The steering wheel hub (16) supports the steering wheel (14) on the steering column (18) for rotation about an axis (20). The spoke (24) moves through a path of movement (30) as the steering wheel (14) rotates about the axis (20). The apparatus (10) further comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (44) having a deflated condition and an inflated condition. The protection device (44) is supported below the spoke (24) and for rotation with the steering wheel (14) about the axis (20). The protection device (44) is inflatable through the path of movement (30) of the spoke (24) to an inflated condition to help protect a driver of the vehicle (12).
