    • An expandable multi-purpose utility shelter (10), designed in several sizes, which is quickly erectable by two to six persons, depending upon the size of the shelter. The structure has a sturdy metal frame (12, 16) with a durable fabric cover attached to the inside of the frame. The frame (12, 16) comprises a series of ribs (12) which can be very quickly and easily extended from a compact folded configuration needed for easy transportation to a full-size shelter at erection. Adjacent ribs (12) are connected by a single reinforcing member (16) or by X-shaped reinforcing members (16a) on each side of the shelter. These reinforcing members serve as force transmitting means for opening and closing the shelter (10) and keeping adjacent ribs (12) stabilized and spaced equidistant. Individual reinforcing members are pivotally connected to the lower portion of one shelter leg and rollably or slideably connected to the upper portion of a next adjacent shelter leg. The ribs (12) are equipped with a plurality of sturdy hinges (24) which are designed to prevent the ribs ( 12) from folding when in the erected position and to prevent pinching and damaging the cover when the shelter is folded. The design of the shelter (10) also provides for securely connecting a plurality of shelters (10) butted together end-to-end or for grouping shelters (10) in complexes and for adding a fly cover (18) to the shelter (10) to insulate the shelter from direct sunlight. The invention also includes a method of erecting the apparatus and a method and arrangement for grouping shelters into a complex.

The design of the shelter (10) provides for attaching a thermal liner (287) and thermal floor (312) to the cover (11) with hook and pile fasteners (288 and 290) so that the shelter (10) may be folded without removing the liner (287) and floor (312). A plenum or duct (298) is attached to liner (287) for air conditioning or heating. A thermal barrier (326) and thermal barrier stand-offs (324 and 327) may be added to the shelter (10) to insulate the shelter from direct sunlight.

    • A pre-stressed arch supported membrane structure, a method of assembly and erection and a means of tensioning a membrane of double curvature supported by and attached to upright arches. By moving the ends of flat resilient arch structural members closer together, pre-stressed arches are formed by ''''bowling.'''' Assembly and erection consists of attaching flat arch member ends to base beams, one fixed and one movable; attaching membranes to these flat members when reclined on the ground, operatively attaching transverse or inclined arch members to their respective structural members; moving the non-fixed base beam towards the fixed base beam thus causing the arches to be formed as the structure rises to its erected position. Preliminary tensioning of the membrane can take place when the transverse or inclined arches are attached to the arch members in their reclined position. Final membrane tensioning adjustments at the crown and at the base by moving the arches horizontally then anchoring the structure to the base, safely securing the base beams and arch ends completes the erection of the main structure. An alternate method of erection is provided by elimination of the base beams by fastening the arches directly to the base. The support arches are ''''bowed'''' after being attached to the transverse or inclined arches and then attached to the base by means of an adjustable fastener. Lightweight end closures or doors may be assembled and partially attached before erection to eliminate or decrease above ground assembly.
