    • An electric drive includes a rotatable shaft, a first drive member, and a second drive member, and is supplied with power from a controller. The controller is operable to supply a first power from a power electronics converter, and a second power that is line power. Supplying the first power individually to the first drive member results in a first shaft speed and first output torque, supplying the second power individually to the second drive member results in a second shaft speed and second output torque, and supplying the first and the second drive members with power at the same time results in a third shaft speed and a third output torque.

    • An induction motor including a single rotor formed in one-piece and first and second stators disposed side by side has a phase changing device for varying the phase difference between the rotational magnetic field generated by the first stator and that generated by the second stator. The phase changing device comprises a first-connection changing switch for making the interconnection of respective stator windings of the stators the first series delta-connection in which the phase difference is 0.degree. when it is in its closed-state and a second-connection changing switch for making the respective stator windings the second series data-connection in which the phase difference is 120.degree. when it is in its closed-state. When both the first- and second-connection changing switches are closed, the interconnection of the stator windings becomes a parallel Y (or star)-connection in which the phase difference produced is 60.degree.. During the motor operation, at least one of the first-switch and the second-switch is always kept in its closed-state. The motor exhibits three different torque curves suitable for starting operation, an intermediate speed operation and normal or steady-state operation by the switching operation of the first- and second-switches.

    • A variable speed controlled induction motor has a rotor (8) formed in one piece and a plurality of stators (24,25), the rotor having a plurality of rotor cores (2,3) and a plurality of conductive members (5) interconnected and the stators having respective stator windings (22,23). The stator windings (22,23) are connected in series, the rotor conductive members (5) are short-circuited by connecting members (r) at an air space or a non-magnetic core portion disposed between the rotor cores (2,3), and at least one of the plurality of stators (24,25) is associated with a phase shifter (38;47;50;51) providing the voltage of a given phase to the stator windings, whereby the rotational speed can be controlled easily over a wide range with excellent torque characteristics and efficiency.

    • In a first type of variable speed electric motor, two coaxial shafts are mounted in a housing. Two rotors are mounted on each shaft. Two stators are mounted in the housing. Each of the stators is in operative association with a rotor mounted on a different one of the shafts. The remaining two rotors are in operative association with each other and form a converter motor. In the second type of variable speed electric motor, two parallel shafts are mounted in a housing. A support is mounted for rotation around the first shaft. Two rotors are mounted on the first shaft. A stator is mounted in the housing in operative association with one of the rotors mounted on the first shaft. A third rotor is mounted on the support in operative association with the other rotor mounted on the first shaft. The support is geared to the first shaft through idler gears mounted on the second shaft.
