    • Fast positive photoresist compositions employing cresol-formaldehyde novolak resins made from a mixture containing meta- and paracresol or ortho-, meta- and paracresol in a ratio selected from a given range and one or more of a selected group of naphthoquinone diazide sensitizing compounds. When dissolved in a mixture of organic solvents, the photoresist compositions are suitable for application as a thin coating to a substrate. After the coating has been dried, the coated substrate can be exposed to image-wise modulated actinic radiation even in the deep ultra-violet range and developed in alkaline solution, yielding a high-resolution relief pattern of resist on substrate useful for a number of applications.

    • A novel metal modified novolak resin is prepared. The metal modified novolak resin is an electron acceptor and is further characterized by its compatability with the surface properties of a paper substrate. The metal modified novolak resin comprises a reaction product of a novolak resin and a metal salt. The novolak resin is a reaction product of a mixture containing a para-substituted phenol selected from the group consisting of paraalkylphenols having alkyl groups of about 1 to about 12 carbon atoms, para-phenylphenol and mixtures thereof, salicylic acid and formaldehyde.The novel metal modified novolak resin is prepared by heating a mixture containing one or more para-substituted phenols, salicylic acid, formaldehyde and an acid catalyst for a period of time sufficient to substantially completely react the phenols, salicylic acid and formaldehyde to form a melted novolak resin. The melted novolak resin is mixed with a zinc salt in an inert atmosphere to form the metal modified novolak resin.The metal modified novolak resin prepared as above can be coated on a paper substrate to produce a pressure-sensitive paper.

    • A process for making a phenol-aldehyde resin adhesive is disclosed in which a portion of the phenol ingredient is replaced with ammonium lignosulfonate. Solid ammonia base waste sulfite liquor residue is dissolved or suspended in phenol and the mixture is heated to a temperature range of 150.degree.-300.degree. C under autogenous pressure until the resulting phenol-ammonium lignosulfonate component of the reaction mass is water insoluble but soluble in aqueous sodium hydroxide. The reaction mass may be washed with water to remove soluble wood sugars and their derivatives. The phenol-ammonium lignosulfonate component may then be condensed with an aldehyde resulting in a resin product that is useful as an exterior adhesive, having suitable water insolubility and adhesive characteristics. The ratio of ammonium lignosulfonate to phenol may range from 2:1 to 1:10, depending upon the desired properties of the finished adhesive.
