    • An apparatus for reliably engaging and supporting a motor vehicle frame for use in vehicle frame and body straightening. The illustrated apparatus includes a plurality of frame engaging clamping heads which each comprise a pair of relatively movable jaw supports, biasing springs interposed between the supports for biasing the supports in a jaw opening position, clamping bolts extending through said supports for selectively moving the jaw supports into clamping position against the biasing force of the interposed springs, and clamping jaws carried by said supports with a floating mounting that permits limited pivotal jaw movement relative to the supports during clamping for enhancing reliable engagement of the jaws with a vehicle frame regardless of surface irregularities. Selectively adjustable mounting arrangements are illustrated for mounting a plurality of such clamping heads on a vertically adjustable frame press, and alternatively, on ground supports, in each case forming a unitized four point frame engagement and support structure.

    • A device for use with a hydraulic cylinder or like for straightening frame members, which converts the extension stroke of the cylinder to a pulling action. The device has a pair of interengaging outer members which are formed to define an elongate cage. The interengaging members are slidably connected to one another for relative movement in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the cage. Retaining means are mounted on the interengaging outer members, which are adapted to removably retain a hydraulic cylinder within the cage aligned along the central longitudinal axis, so that extension of the cylinder causes a contraction of the interengaging member along the direction of the longitudinal axis. The interengaging members are adapted at opposite ends for connection to a frame member to be straightened.

    • Apparatus for the positioning of an automobile vehicle bodywork on an inspection and/or repair gauge block of the type comprising two parallel longitudinal members having an I-section. The apparatus comprises two cross members for disposition beneath the longitudinal members the cross members being mounted for movement along the longitudinal members by means of rollers rolling on the lower flanges of the longitudinal members.     • Apparatus is provided to apply pulling forces from any direction from any elevation around a vehicle being repaired and/or serviced. The apparatus is arranged so personnel using it are concerned with minimal physical lifting movements and minimal setup arrangements of the apparatus. Each embodiment of the apparatus utilizes at least one tower assembly equipped with an elongating subassembly to move a tension member, through directional change devices, as it remains secured to some portion of a vehicle, thereby undergoing at least one repositioning pull in a direction opposite to at least one prior force that previously caused some of the damage and/or misalignment. Depending on the magnitude of the restoring force required, the tower, other towers, and/or other structures may be secured together and/or to the vehicle as well, to create a firm basis for anchoring the apparatus and/or the vehicle as one or more reactive forces are controllably created. Depending on the anticipated use of the apparatus and the capital expenditures to be made, the apparatus is made available in different embodiments, ranging from a sole location of a tower to multiple locations of several towers related to overall reactive structures and/or vehicle ramps serving as mutual multiple holding or anchoring places of forces applied to the vehicle, as the elongating subassemblies of the towers are moved to create the restorative pulling forces.

    • A pulling tool including a first pulling member which is essentially a rectangular-shaped flat bar of heavy metal having a pair of holes formed in it in spaced apart relationship. Affixed to one face of this flat bar is a pulling bar which likewise is a heavy metal material and which has a hole in it whereby a hydraulic jack or the like can be attached to the first pulling member. The pulling tool also includes a second generally U-shaped pulling member having a straight portion and a pair of legs which are spaced apart a distance corresponding to the distance between the two holes in the flat bar of the first pulling member, and a handle. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, both of the pair of legs are threaded to receive a threaded nut, with the first and second pulling members being affixed together by extending the two legs of the second pulling member through the two apertures in the first pulling member, and then threadedly affixing the nuts on the legs.

    • In combination with a treadway upon which a vehicle, whose structure is to be realigned, is positioned, an improved alignment apparatus interconnecting the treadway and a selected portion of the vehicle structure. The alignment apparatus has a base assembly having a horizontal leg with a vertical member attached thereto, and a clamping assembly secured to the vertical member for attachment to the vehicle structure. The horizontal leg is adapted to rest on the treadway and is interconnected to a plurality of spaced openings in the treadway. The alignment apparatus may be rigidly secured to the treadway, or may slide across the treadway in response to a pulling force applied either to the vehicle or the alignment apparatus all while supporting the vehicle structure.

    • Apparatus for repairing and straightening is disclosed in its preferred form for use in repairing and straightening the body and frame of a vehicle. The preferred apparatus includes a tread member including left and right track members for supporting a vehicle thereon, a tram member movable along and between the right and left track members and including two elongatable pull towers pivotally mounted thereto, and an additional elongatable pull tower mounted adjacent an end of the apparatus. A flexible connector, preferably a chain, is arranged for connection between the pull towers and the vehicle. The track members further include regularly shaped apertures which vertically pass therethrough. Locking pins are also provided which extend through an aperture of the track members and abut with a portion of the pull towers to lock the pull towers at any desired angle to the tread member. Bolsters are further provided which extend through the regular apertures of the track member and abut with a portion of the vehicle frame for anchoring the vehicle to the apparatus to prevent the vehicle from moving when it is subjected to the counter forces during the repair and straightening operation.
