    • 1,271,494. Press filter. L. B. HOLLIDAY & CO. Ltd. 2 May, 1969 [9 May, 1968; 24 Oct., 1968], Nos. 22009/68 and 50525/68. Heading BID. A hollow, perforate, cylindrical core 1 is covered by sheet filtering medium and is axially movable into and out of a cylindrical housing 2 which is lined by an inflatable sleeve 5. Slurry pumped or flowing under gravity into space 13, between the medium and diaphragm, is first allowed to drain through the medium, then the inlet valve is closed and sleeve 5 inflated by compressed air or water, forcing more of the liquid content of the slurry through the medium to outlet 23. The sleeve is deflated, the pressure fluid being returned to its storage tank, and the core 1 is withdrawn from the housing by ram 24, carrying the adhering filter cake, which is then removed. In Fig. 1, ram 24 moves the core and end plate 17, to which it is secured by struts 25 which extend through slots 27 in hollow shaft 3 along which the core slides. Ram 24 is pressurised to hold the core in its inserted position in Fig. I, but Figs. 10 to 13 (not shown) illustrate an arrangement of latches which lock plate 17 to the housing, after which the ram pressure need not be maintained. Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) illustrate the annular seals which close the two ends of space 13 when the core is inserted. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates a preliminary screen across slurry inlet 22, and Figs. 7, 8, 9 (not shown) illustrate the construction of the core, which is covered by a rubber sleeve (64) having external, axial and circumferential grooves to drain the filtrate to openings (19). The filtration may be preceded by applying a filter aid of carbon or diatomaceous earth to the filtering medium, and the filter cake may be washed and dried by passage of hot gas before withdrawing the core. The filtering medium may be cleaned by backwashing. Fig. 14 (not shown) illustrates the circuits for slurry, filtrate and pressure fluid. The housing may be metal lined with rubber or chlorinated polyester. The filtering medium may be cloth, secured to the core body by rubber rings or plastics braiding. Various applications are suggested, particularly recovery from suspension of Acid Yellow 17 and 2 naphthol-3, 6-disulphonic acid.

    • For the separation of suspensions in the form of liquid solid component mixtures with the aid of porous filter membranes or for the separation of suspensions free of solid components into the liquid components with the aid of solution diffusion membranes, a reduced pressure is produced on the permeate side of the membrane. For this purpose the permeate is sucked off by a jet pump and is transferred into a closed circuit flow in which it serves as a drive medium for the jet pump. The apparatus for performing the method includes a membrane filter arrangement (6) with a closed circuit conduit (11) connected to the permeate discharge conduit. A conveying pump (13) and a jet pump (10) as well as a collecting container (12) is arranged in the closed circuit conduit. The permeate discharge conduit is connected with the jet pump.

    • A rust and scale arrester intended for use in heat transfer systems particularly for water cooling systems of internal combustion engines is mounted in place of an ordinary connection hose. Primary and secondary filter deflector screens are mounted at about 60.degree. to the flow of water from the inlet to the outlet. The primary filter deflector screen extends downward into the collection chamber and extends rearward to cause solid particles to flow outward along walls of the collection chamber. The downward extension has a forward and downward extending portion which encourages solid particles flowing downward from the first deflection screen to flow along walls of the collection chamber. The forward portion of the downward extension has openings which allow upward water flow, and the downward and rearward extending portion has openings which allow water to flow over the downward and forward extending portion to remove particles and promote water flow.

    • The invention relates to an apparatus for treatment of particulate mixtures such as a mixture of solid particles, which is to be depleted in, enriched by or treated with a fluid, or wherein the mixture acts as a treatment medium for a fluid passing through same. The apparatus is of the type operating with an advancing bed of the particulate material. It utilizes walls permeable by at least a portion of the fluid. The apparatus is of the type of tubular, rectangular or the like vessel having only stationary parts and subdivided by a selected combination of permeable and non-permeable walls into separate chambers into or from which the fluid can be delivered or removed. The movement of the particulate mixture is effected solely by forcing same through a passage having preferably but not exclusively an annular chamber, by pumping, by gravity or by a combination of both. Additional throttling or valve means are employed to selectively control the advancement of the bed through the device. The device is simple in structure and can be relatively easily adjusted for a great variety of different operations, from plain filtering to a complex washing or treatment of the particulate bed with different liquids in order to extract desired matter from the raw bed.
