    • A system for the remote reading of a gas meter includes an interface unit within a domestic residence but situated such that an input/output terminal for the interface unit is accessable from the exterior of the residence, and a hand-held meter reading unit for connection to the terminal in order to read and record the value of the gas consumption indicated by the meter. The meter reading unit has two LED sources, whose outputs are combined a Y-coupler, for passage into the interface unit when an optical fibre is connected thereto. At a multiplexer, the combined beam is dispersed according to wavelength and separately passes along a fibre array to respective roller digits of the tumbler for reflection or not according to the displayed reading. Reflected light passes back through the system, is divided at a Y-coupler and passes to a de-multiplexer such that the light returning in respect of the roller digits can be measured and displayed at a light detector and liquid crystal display.

    • In at least one embodiment, a mobile measurement system includes a handheld device, a measurement device, and an optical sensing device. The measurement device and the optical sensing device are communicatively coupled to the handheld device. The handheld device receives measurement data that comprises at least one measured electrical parameter corresponding to a physical property of an external system. The measurement device generates measurement data that corresponds to a period of time. The measurement device communicates the generated measurement data to the handheld device. The optical sensing device generates optical data corresponding to an interface of the measurement device and the external system where the measurement data is being generated. The generated optical data corresponds to a particular time within the measurement period of time. The mobile measurement system associates and stores the generated optical data for the particular time with measurement data corresponding to the period of time.

    • A system and method for testing a multimeter provides a mechanical arm to set a gear of the multimeter. Values displayed on the multimeter are captured by a camera. The computer obtains the displayed values from captured images using a difference image method. If a difference between each two obtained values is in an allowable error range of the multimeter, the computer displays that the gear is qualified. If the difference between each two obtained values is not in the allowable error range, the computer displays that the gear is out of tolerance.

    • A system and method is provided for automatically reading meters, such as utility meters. A camera unit is attached to or otherwise associated with an existing meter. From time to time, either automatically, or upon wireless command, the camera unit takes an image of the meter's readings, and communicates wirelessly the image or image data, to a local area receiver. The images can be transmitted immediately, or stored for later transmission, depending on the network protocol. The camera unit is battery powered, and operates communication protocols that enable extended operational life. These protocols allow for the camera's radio and processor to be turned on only when necessary, and then for only brief periods of time. At most times, the camera is in a power-conserving sleep mode. Multiple camera units may be arranged to communicate meter image data to the local area receiver, either using asynchronous or synchronous processes. In this way, star, point-to-point, MESH and ring networking topologies are enabled. The meter image data is communicated from the receiver to a central office using a wide area connection, where the image data is used for determining the meter reading. In one example, the image may be included with a utility bill as confirmed evidence of the current meter reading.

    • The invention provides apparatus having a sensor system for providing sensor information for a monitoring, control or other operating function of the apparatus. The sensor system comprises: a transducer (16) adapted to be responsive to a predetermined environmental characteristic of the apparatus for providing an electrical output, and means (18) adjacent to the transducer to accentuate the said characteristic. At least one sensor (20) is arranged to be operated by power derived from the electrical output for generating a detection signal, and means (38, 40) arranged to be operated by power derived from the electrical output and responsive to the detection signal are also provided for communicating sensor information to a processing unit remote from the sensor system and associated with the said function.
