    • Some embodiments of the present invention provide a system for estimating electrical power usage of commercially available devices utilizing a portable computing device equipped with a digital camera. In some embodiments, initial input to the system is accomplished by taking a digital photograph of an electrical device surface in order to capture text or other marks such as barcodes from which power usage of the device can be determined. In some embodiments OCR (optical character recognition) is used to retrieve text from the digital photograph. If successfully extracted from the captured text, power parameters such as voltage, amperes and watts are provided to the system user on the display of the mobile device. At this point an estimate of electrical device usage during a particular time period, such as a week, can be input into the system. The system will then calculate power usage over the specified time period for the electrical device and show the result on the system display.

    • A system and method is provided for automatically reading meters, such as utility meters. A camera unit is attached to or otherwise associated with an existing meter. From time to time, either automatically, or upon wireless command, the camera unit takes an image of the meter's readings, and communicates wirelessly the image or image data, to a local area receiver. The images can be transmitted immediately, or stored for later transmission, depending on the network protocol. The camera unit is battery powered, and operates communication protocols that enable extended operational life. These protocols allow for the camera's radio and processor to be turned on only when necessary, and then for only brief periods of time. At most times, the camera is in a power-conserving sleep mode. Multiple camera units may be arranged to communicate meter image data to the local area receiver, either using asynchronous or synchronous processes. In this way, star, point-to-point, MESH and ring networking topologies are enabled. The meter image data is communicated from the receiver to a central office using a wide area connection, where the image data is used for determining the meter reading. In one example, the image may be included with a utility bill as confirmed evidence of the current meter reading.

    • Some embodiments of the present invention provide a system for estimating electrical power usage of commercially available devices utilizing a portable computing device equipped with a digital camera.     • An improved system and method for obtaining data related to the operation of a processing system which converts from analog measurement data, usually obtained from meters and gages, to digital data. Visual images of various types of measuring instruments are collected and used for measuring a process functionality. An image sensor provides an image of a first feature of the measuring instrument. The image data is processed by an image processor, which is operable to detect a first feature and determine its position relative to a second feature of the measuring instrument. The difference in the relative positions (measured distance) can then be compared to a predetermined or expected value. If the measured and expected values are not substantially the same, a signal can be generated which instructs a controller to adjust the process functionality until the measured value reaches the expected value.

    • An apparatus for signalling an operating condition of a cooking vessel is provided to signal a user of the cooking vessel when a preset condition is reached in the cooking vessel, e.g. temperature or pressure. Cooking vessels are frequently provided with an operating condition display device, such as a thermometer or a pressure gauge, which have a measurement scale and an indicator element moving relative to the measurement scale to indicate the internal condition of the cooking vessel. The apparatus of the present invention provides a housing having therein a detector for detecting a change in the reflected surface light from the operating condition display device caused by the presence of the indicator element of the display device. When the detector detects the change in the reflected light due to the presence of the indicator element, a signalling device, such as an acoustical or optical signalling device, is activated to signal the user of the cooking vessel. The apparatus can be set along the measurement scale at a desired operating condition, such as a specific temperature or pressure, so that the user is warned when the cooking vessel reaches this condition.
