    • An improvement in movement of the recording section in a recording apparatus such as a typewriter, a printer or the like is provided. This recording apparatus comprises: a print ribbon cassette having a recording material; a carriage having a solenoid or a cam for moving the cassette; a detector for detecting the vertical or horizontal moving amount of the cassette; and a controller for controlling the moving condition of the cassette moved by the carriage on the basis of an output from the detector. The moving time of the ribbon cassette is changed in accordance with the typing speed of the operator or the size of character to be recorded. Thus, the whole printing time can be shortened and the noise generated in association with the typing operation can be reduced.

    • A cartridge for a printing ribbon for a typewriter having a character-carrying disc comprises a casing and two oscillating arms between the ends of which a run of the ribbon extends in a straight line on the outside of the casing between the disc and the platen. The arms oscillate from a rest position in which they make the typing point visible, to three or more working positions in which they make it possible to print using one of three tracks of the ribbon. The two oscillating arms are pivoted by means of pins on seats of fixed supports of the casing. Pivotally mounted at the free end of each arm is a guide element, a stem of the guide element being received in a sleeve of the arm. Each guide element is thus capable of modifying its angular position with respect to the respective arm in response to the selection movement so that the ribbon is always held in tension in a uniform manner, irrespective of the track selected.

    • A printer having a ribbon lift mechanism for lifting a ribbon from a rest position to a printing position. The printer operates in two different modes, that is, a printer mode in which characters are printed according to the data in a memory and a typewriter mode in which characters are printed according to the data from a keyboard. The ribbon is returned from the printing position to the rest position when no subsequent data comes from the memory within a first preset time interval in the printer mode or when no subsequent data comes from the keyboard within a second preset time interval in the typewriter mode. The second time interval is preset shorter than the first time inteval in order to print successively in the printer mode and to put back the ribbon to the rest position quickly when an operator needs to check the print on a printing paper in the typewriter mode.

    • The ribbon (17) has an external run between the type element (25) and platen of a daisy-wheel typewriter. This run stretches between terminal members (59) which protrude from side arms (33 and 34) of the cartridge casing (18) and are fixed to the distal ends of arms (39, 41) pivotally mounted in the casing (18) at pivot (52). Ribbon lift levers of the typewriter raise the arms simultaneously to position a selected one of three tracks on the ribbon at the level of the typing. The ribbon is transferred from a feed spool having a flange to a take-up spool having a core tube and which are rotatably supported by the casing. The casing comprises a bottom portion having a resilient tongue with a pawl member positioned adjacent to the take-up spool and a resilient blade adjacent to the feed spool. The core tube of the take-up spool has a series of saw teeth and the pawl member cooperates with the saw teeth for enabling the rotary movement of the core tube in the direction of rewinding of the typing ribbon, but preventing rotary movement of the core tube in the other direction, while the resilient blade engages with peripheral notches at the flange of the feed spool. The casing further provides two apertures for housing a driving toothed wheel and a control lever of the typewriter which engage with the ribbon to control the feeding of the ribbon.

Ribbon lift mechanism is provided for effecting elevation of a ribbon (23) to multiple predetermined positions or tracks (1-10) (FIG. 3B) intermediate a printwheel (25) and a platen (21) so that indicia or character may be printed on print receiving medium (22) held thereby. In essence, an input means (11) receives a character to be printed. The microprocessor (13), in conjunction with the ROM (15), characterizes the character in accordance with a predetermined plurality of characteristics. In accordance with ribbon lift and feed algorithms, a particular characteristic of the character to be printed is added to a position on the ribbon upon which at least one prior character has been printed. In this manner a new print position is determined. Thereafter, the new track print position is outputted to the ribbon lift and feed means for effecting elevation of said ribbon (23) to one of a multiple of predetermined positions to thereby approximately maximize the number of predetermined positions of said ribbon with characters thereon which may be printed without character overlap.
