    • A method and an apparatus serve to secure a gripper tool detachably to a movable crossbar of a transfer press. The gripper tool has two saddles, with spacing between them, which are brought into engagement with two bearings mounted on the crossbar and locked in a defined engagement position. To attain faster, simpler assembly, the gripper tool is introduced in an inclined position relative to the crossbar, by at least one protrusion of rounded longitudinal section or tapering in wedgelike fashion, on the first saddle, into a correspondingly rounded or V-shaped narrowing recess in the first bearing. The second saddle is then pivoted toward the crossbar. In the process, wedge faces on the second saddle and on the second bearing press the protrusion axially against the wall of the recess by the force of gravity. In the end position, the second saddle is locked to the second bearing.

    • A multiple station transfer press (20) is provided. The cross bar assemblies (42) transfer work pieces (22) between adjacent press stations (24) in transfer press (10). Movement of the cross bar assemblies (42) is provided by raising and lowering transfer rails (38) and (40) along with reciprocating cross bar assemblies (42) along transfer rails (38) and (40). Each cross bar assembly (42) can also be tilted and/or tipped relative to the transfer rails (38 and 40). Cross bar assemblies (42) are used to dynamically orient work pieces (22) during transfer between adjacent press stations (24). A portion of the motion of each cross bar assembly (42) occurs while upper dies (36) and lower dies (34) are separated by less than a maximum distance. The cross bar assemblies (42) preferably include at least two cross bars (130, 132) which may be rotated one hundred and eighty degrees to accommodate changing holding devices such as suction cups (268, 270) while changing dies (36, 34). The cross bars (130, 132) may also be independently rotated relative to each other and the associated cross bar assembly (42) to accommodate specific dies (36, 34) and/or work pieces (22) which are best engaged by holding devices (268, 270) oriented with a specific polar rotation relative to the longitudinal axis (384) of the respective cross bar (130, 132).

    • A bolster supports the lower dies of a row of die sets for use in a transfer press. The upper dies are carried by a vertically reciprocable ram. Transfer mechanism is provided to move blanks along the row of die sets, comprising longitudinally extending side rails and cross bars having blank grippers releasably attached to the side rails. A plurality of stands are mounted on the bolster. The stands are adapted to support the cross bars after the cross bars have been detached from the side rails and the bolster is moved out of the press to change dies. The stands also support the cross bars in positions for re-attachment to the side rails when the bolster is moved back inside the press. Some of the stands are mounted on the bolster for pivotal movement away from the dies so that after the cross bars have been removed, there is sufficient clearance for removing and replacing the die sets. Other stands are removable.

    • A production line which includes a shuttle conveyor extending between two work stations. A first transfer device for transferring a workpiece from one of the work stations to the conveyor and a second transfer device for transferring the workpiece to the second work station are equipped with workpiece gripping or supporting devices which may be rapidly changed when the line is shifted from the production of one form of workpiece to the production of another workpiece having a different configuration. Replacement workpiece gripping devices are supported adjacent the shuttle conveyor upon holding pedestals. Upon line changeover, the transfer devices locate their workpiece gripping devices upon empty holding pedestals and actuating devices on the pedestal release the gripping devices from their transfer devices. The empty transfer devices are then shifted and coupled to new workpiece gripping devices supported on other holding pedestals. The transfer device includes the ability for adjustment of the article engaging devices in three directions.
