    • A honeycomb body that including wound sheet-metal layers including structured sheet-metal layers with structuring. The wound sheet-metal layers form an upper side, a lower side disposed remote from the upper side, a first edge region and a second edge region laterally extending from the upper side to the lower side. The second edge region is disposed remote from the first edge region. The wound sheet-metal layers are fixed in a common fixing zone at the first edge region. The structuring of the structured sheet-metal layers is at least partially flattened at the fixing zone so that adjacent wound sheet-metal layers lie close against each other at the common fixing zone. The wound sheet-metal layers preferably form a region with a flattened cross-sectional area. A muffler of an exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine that includes the honeycomb body is also provided. In addition, a two-region housing that includes the honeycomb body is provided. Finally, a process for producing the honeycomb body is provided.

    • A catalytic reactor for catalytic conversion of exhaust gases, in particular exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, includes a honeycomb body disposed in a metallic casing. The honeycomb body has a large number of channels through which exhaust gas can flow, a gas inlet side and a gas outlet side. The honeycomb body is thermally insulated by internal insulation over a part of its length from the gas inlet side onward and preferably also from the gas outlet side onward, with respect to an inner surface of the casing. An outer surface of the casing also has thermal insulation at least in some regions. The casing serves as a heat store or accumulator, at least in some regions. This construction provides advantageous properties during both cold starting and hot starting as one sub-region rapidly heats up during cold starting and one sub-region only slowly cools down after prolonged operation due to storage of heat in the casing.

    • A metallic honeycomb body has an axial length, a partial volume covering at least 55% of the length, a radial dimension of at least 20 mm and inflow and outflow end sides. Sheet-metal layers are structured permitting a fluid, particularly internal combustion engine exhaust gas, to flow through the body between the end sides. The layers each have a surface area, partial regions and end side edges. Each of the layers has a multiplicity of holes formed at least in the partial regions in the partial volume. The holes have a hole surface area of between 1 and 120 mm2. The layer surface area in the partial volume is reduced by 10 to 80%, preferably 35 to 60%, by the holes compared to a layer without holes. The partial volume is spaced from each of the end sides, preventing the holes from touching and cutting through the end side edges. The partial volume amounts, in particular, to more than 60%, preferably more than 90%, of the total honeycomb body volume. A highly effective coating for treatment of a fluid for most known forms of honeycomb bodies yet with a reduced use of coating material while still being able to specifically match properties of a honeycomb body in terms of mechanical stability, heat capacity, thermal conductivity and the like to the requirements of individual applications, is provided.
