    • An optical transmitting/receiving apparatus comprises a laser and an optical detector. The optical transmitting/receiving apparatus is connected to an optical fiber by a coupling mechanism in such a way that the optical fiber can be connected and disconnected to and from the optical transmitting/receiving apparatus with a high degree of freedom. An optical signal transmitted by the laser is supplied to the optical fiber. On the other hand, an inputting optical signal received through the optical fiber and a loopback optical signal are supplied to the optical detector. A signal output by the optical detector is supplied to a receiving circuit. When a self-diagnosis of the optical transmitting/receiving apparatus is carried out, the optical fiber is disconnected from the optical transmitting/receiving apparatus. In the self-diagnosis, a loopback control circuit generates a driving circuit control signal in accordance with a loopback control signal. The driving circuit control signal is supplied to a driving circuit for driving the laser in order to adjust the optical signal output by the laser.

    • According to an aspect of the present invention, in a virtual space unit area, a message is distributed among computers using a physical topology based on a physical network. This avoids delaying operations in a computer which are related to those in another computer on a virtual space and taking a roundabout route on the physical network for distribution. On the other hand, outside the virtual space unit area, a message is distributed among computers using a virtual topology based on a virtual space. Consequently, the computers forming the physical topology can be limited to those present in the virtual space unit area. It is thus possible to reduce the amount of communication required to measure physical network distances.

    • An optical transmitter receiver is provided in which the power of light to be transmitted therefrom is set to a proper value by controlling the relative timing of changing the power of light to be transmitted therefrom. An optical transmitter receiver consists of an optical transmitter, an optical receiver, a signal level detector, and a signal level controller. The optical transmitter transmits a light signal to a mate optical transmitter receiver. The optical receiver receives a light signal from the mate optical transmitter receiver. The signal level detector detects the level of the light signal received by the optical receiver. The signal level controller changes the power of the light signal to be transmitted by the optical transmitter from one value to another according to the signal level detected by the signal level detector. The optical transmitter receiver further includes a delay device for delaying changing of the power of a light signal to be transmitted which is performed by the signal level controller.
