    • An apparatus operates to identify the speech signal of an unknown speaker as one of a finite number of speakers. Each speaker is modeled and recognized with any example of their speech. The input to the system is analog speech and the output is a list of scores that measure how similar the input speaker is to each of the speakers whose models are stored in the system. The system includes front end processing means which is responsive to the speech signal to provide digitized samples of the speech signal at an output which are stored in a memory. The stored digitized samples are then retrieved and divided into frames. The frames are processed to provide a series of speech parameters indicative of the nature of the speech content in each of the frames. The processor for producing the speech parameters is coupled to either a speaker modeling means, whereby a model for each speaker is provided and consequently stored, or a speaker recognition mode, whereby the speech parameters are again processed with current parameters and compared with the stored parameters during each speech frame. The comparison is accomplished over a predetermined number of frames whereby a favorable comparison is indicative of a known speaker for which a model is stored.

    • A photoconductor comprising an optically sensitive FET in which an abrupt heterojunction (18) is inserted in the channel (11) at a certain distance from the gate contact (16). This provides a potential barrier (17, FIG. 4) in the valence band that accumulates minority carriers (carriers of the lower mobility type) and controls their release. A gate bias resistor which is conventionally used in a receiver circuit including the FET is no longer required, instead the potential barrier height determines the time constant and a response comparable in length with an input optical pulse is achieved. This overcomes the problems of integrated manufacture, and slow response, associated with the large value of the bias resistor which is needed to reduce noise.

    • There is disclosed a method for determining the location of an arc or corona as occurring in a high voltage power supply. The technique utilizes sheets of sensitive photographic film which are placed between printed circuit boards of the supply or between high voltage components and the metallic chassis walls of the power supply. During supply operation if an arc or corona occurs the film becomes exposed. The amount of exposure is determinative of the magnitude of the arc as well as indicative of the location of the arc or corona discharge which location and magnitude is determined by developing the film after supply operation. In this manner a comparative analysis of the amount of corona or arc as a function of time can be made by comparing the film density after photographic chemical development. The technique enables one to, therefore, accurately determine not only the magnitude of the arc or corona discharge but the exact location of the same.

    • A circuit is provided for correlating both the phase and amplitude of received radar signals with the phase of a transmitted binary reference phase code, which enables implementation by off-the-shelf hardware. The received signal is demodulated and quadrature detected, and each segment of small duration of the received signal is converted to a three-bit data code word, with each data word defining both the phase and the amplitude of the demodulated received signal. Each bit of the same significance (e.g., most significant bit or least significant bit) of a series of data words is delivered to a different one of a group of one-bit correlators. Each correlator correlates the series of bits of the same significance from a sequence of data words, with the bits of the binary reference phase code. The outputs of the correlators whose bits represent the amplitude of the received signal, are multiplied according to the significance or position of the bit, and the products are added.
