    • A magnetic tape device including a tape guide to guide a magnetic tape as the magnetic tape travels past a magnetic head to provide good contact between the magnetic tape and the magnetic head. The tape guide includes a roller guides, or roller guides and guide posts. The roller guide includes upper and lower flange units in sliding contact with the edges of the magnetic tape, and a roller unit between the upper and lower flange unit having the magnetic tape wrapped on an outer circumferential surface. The upper and lower flange units include concave portions disposed in an upper surface of the lower flange unit, and in a lower surface of the upper flange unit, to avoid sliding contact with the edge of the magnetic tape. The concave portions are positioned in the upper and lower flange units such that the upper and lower edges of the magnetic tape contact the upper and lower flange units only at a portion corresponding to the portion of the magnetic tape contacting the outer circumferential surface of the roller unit. The guide post also includes upper and lower flange units having concave portions to avoid sliding contact. Furthermore, the lower flange unit of the roller guide and the lower flange unit of the guide post may be the same member.

    • A locking system for preventing a take-up reel of a tape drive from rotating when a tape cartridge is not inserted to the drive. Locking elements are defined about the take-up reel, a buckling mechanism, and a load ring to interact and provide locking engagement to prevent take-up reel rotation. The take-up reel, buckling mechanism and load ring rotate in concert during insertion and removal of the cartridge and are positioned relative to each other such that as the tape cartridge is inserted to the tape drive, locking elements disengage to enable rotation of the take-up reel. As the cartridge is inserted into the drive, locking elements return to locking engagement.

    • An attachment structure for a tape body which supports, on reel hubs, a tape body such as a leader tape, etc. to which a magnetic tape is connected.     • A forced recording medium cartridge unloading system for use with a library apparatus which is operatively connected to a plurality of host computers. Interposed between the host computers and the library apparatus is a library controller that supervises and controls the library apparatus. The library controller issues a forced recording medium cartridge unloading command in response to a key input or to a request from any one of the host computers. An accessor of the library apparatus upon receipt of the forced unloading command from the library controller in turn issues a forced recording medium cartridge unloading command to a recording medium drive unit that writes and reads data to and from the recording medium cartridge loaded therein. This causes the recording medium drive unit forcibly to unload the recording medium cartridge left loaded inadvertently therein.

    • A system and method for controlling an amount of force supplied by a motor to move an object from an at-rest position is presented. The system comprises a motor controller configured to provide a motor control signal to control the amount of force supplied by the motor, and a position sensor configured to detect an actual position of the object being moved by the motor and to send an actual position signal to the motor controller. The motor control signal supplied by the motor controller controls the motor such that the motor supplies a cubic increase in force on the object to move the object from its at-rest position. The motor controller comprises a profile generator, configured to provide an acceleration profile, a velocity profile and a position profile, and to output a drive signal in response to the position profile, wherein the position profile represents a desired position of the object as a function of time. The position profile is a cubic profile as a function of time. The motor controller further comprises a summer to generate an error signal based on the difference between the desired position and the actual position. The motor controller also includes a compensator to generate the motor control signal in response to the error signal.
