摘要： A helical scan data recording and playback apparatus includes a tape driving motor which continuously transports a magnetic tape on which there are a data recording area and a plurality of reference helical tracks preceding the data recording area. The data recording area is for recording and playback of target data on and from data recording tracks in the data recording area. The reference helical tracks have a specific pattern prerecorded thereon in a predetermined area of the helical reference tracks, and a configuration of the helical reference tracks is similar to a configuration of the data recording tracks. The apparatus further includes a rotary head cylinder, at least one magnetic head, coupled to the rotary head cylinder, which scans tracks on the magnetic tape and plays back the specific pattern from the reference helical tracks on the magnetic tape before recording or playback of target data on or from the data recording tracks in the data recording area on the magnetic tape, and a servo circuit which controls the tape driving motor based on the specific pattern played back from the reference helical tracks.

摘要： A recording/playback apparatus including a stationary drum on which a traveling magnetic tape is wound, a plurality of magnetic heads for recording and playing back data, a rotary portion which is rotated while carrying the heads thereon, a drive portion which drives the rotary portion, an air injection device which spouts air from the vicinities of the magnetic heads toward the magnetic tape in order to separate the tape from the heads, and a control device which controls the start and stop of the air spouting of the air injection device. In the standby mode of the apparatus, in which the rotary portion is rotated though the heads perform neither the recording nor the playback operation, the tape is separated from the heads, so that the heads are prevented from wearing away. As soon as the standby mode has ended, the tape is brought into contact with the heads, so that the recording or playback operation can be immediately started.

摘要： A magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus comprises a source for producing test signals, a variable-gain amplifier, an equalizer, a recording bias generating circuit, a control unit for supplying control signals to the amplifier, equalizer and recording bias generating circuit, a memory and an operating circuit unit. The apparatus is automatically adjusted to each individual magnetic tape in use in such a manner that: a first test signal from the source is recorded on a magnetic tape with a preset bias control signal, the recorded first test signal is reproduced, the bias control signal is adjusted to provide a maximum HF saturation level and a minimum distortion to thereby determine an optimum bias control signal, and the proper bias control signal is fixed for said bias generating circuit; another test signal from the source is recorded on the magnetic tape with a preset gain control signal, the recorded other test signal is reproduced and is compared with a reference value at the operating circuit unit to provide an error signal, and the resulting error signal is fed through the memory to the control unit to renew the preset gain control signal for said amplifier. The adjustment of the frequency response control signal for the equalizer is effected in the same manner as the adjustment of the gain control signal.

摘要： A magnetic tape drive in a helical scan system can shorten retry operation time. A data signal reproduced from magnetic tape through reproducing heads is supplied to a regenerative signal processing circuit. If an uncorrectable error is contained in the signal, the regenerative signal processing circuit outputs error information to a system controller. Then, the system controller sends a retry instruction to a movable head controller. When receiving the retry instruction, the movable head controller supplies movable head control signals to displacement elements which then displace the reproducing heads along a rotating shaft of a rotary drum for re-scanning an error occurrence data track. This retry operation is repeated until no error is detected. The magnetic tape is run at lower speed or is stopped as required during the repetitive retry operation.
