    • A disposable fluid control island for workers is made of a broad, shallow tray or flat open-topped container that is filled with a stiff mesh, grid, grille or net upon which workers may stand. Water, oil, blood and other liquids pass through the mesh easily and are retained in the tray. Workers are supported above the accumulated liquids by the support medium. The apparatus helps to keep the feet of workers dry, reduces the likelihood of slipping, and prevents liquids from dispersing. The disposable fluid control island is particularly well-suited for use during orthopedic surgical procedures, but can be used with other activities including plumbing repairs, handling of hazardous materials, and other medical procedures. Fluid collected by the disposable fluid control island may be removed by vacuum or liquid drains, sealed into containers, and disposed of appropriately given the nature of the materials. The fluid control island may then be sealed within a bio-hazard bag or other appropriate containment for disposal. The edges of the container may be sloped to provide a transition between the surrounding floor and the support medium. In an alternate version, the support mesh and tray may be fitted within a permanent receiving station or recessed portion of the floor.

    • A system for delivering an anaesthetic-containing fluid to a desired site in a patient includes a catheter for channeling the fluid into a unitary portal penetrating a body. A pump capable of delivering fluid at a constant flow rate is dimensioned to retain sufficient fluid for at least a one-day delivery and is adapted to permit being affixed to the body to permit portability. A fluid line, such as tubing, transports fluid from the pump to the catheter. A kit further includes an introducer needle dimensioned to permit the catheter to pass therethrough. A method of relieving pain at a surgical site postoperatively over an extended period of time includes the steps of inserting an anaesthetic-containing fluid into a pump interior having a capacity sufficient for at least a two-day delivery. The skin of a patient is punctured with an introducer needle at a desired site adjacent the surgical site, and an epidural-type catheter is passed through the introducer needle, which is then removed, leaving the catheter at the desired site. The catheter connects tubing to the pump interior, and fluid is permitted to flow from the pump to the desired site.

    • A drive motor for an infusion pump system includes a novel outer housing which includes a unitary member which defines a cavity adapted to receive a winding wherein the housing cavity has a length at least as long as length of the winding. In one embodiment, the housing unitary member has an opening at one end and is adapted to receive a housing end member which has a guide track for an armature. Such an arrangement facilitates assembly and disassembly of the motor for fabrication, inspection and repair purposes yet also facilitates proper alignment of the components when assembled. In another aspect, a push member positioned to be engaged by the armature has an engagement face which is at least 40% of the width of the armature engagement face. In still another aspect of the present inventions, the armature head portion is wider than the armature stem portion and has a length at least 10% of the winding length. In yet another aspect of the present inventions the push member may have a single diameter cylindrical shape and the push member guide track similarly may have a single diameter cylindrical shape which is sized to slidingly receive the push member. It is believed that one or more of these features can increase the actuation force provided by the motor yet maintain a compact size.

    • An external medical drainage system is provided which has a slide interface between a mounting assembly to a pole, and a disposable drip assembly and a stopcock which snap-fits to the mounting assembly. The mounting assembly includes a clamp which is fastenable to the pole, and a support rail affixed to the clamp and which has a longitudinal slot that defines an open-face elongated channel. The drip assembly includes a key adjustably positionable within the channel, a graduated cylinder supported by the key, a drainage bag fluidly connected to the graduated cylinder, tubing extending from the graduated cylinder opposite the drainage bag, and a stopcock associated with the tubing and fixed to a clip. The stopcock clip snap-fits into clip-accepting notches of the clamp. A portion of the key disposed within the channel has a cross-sectioned configuration substantially matching the cross section of the channel. The key extends through the slot, but the channel is configured such that the support rail provides means for restricting the key to longitudinal movement within the channel. A lock fixes the key at a desired location within the channel.

Counterweights within the eccentric reduce the vibrations transmitted to the user's hand and isolate the oscillating vibration of the vibratory head assembly. Undesired rotation of the vibratory head assembly is prevented by a mounting construction between the oscillating adapter components and a stationary portion of the vibratory head assembly secured to the motor unit.

    • A pump used to infuse a medical liquid into a patient is autoprimed under the control of a microprocessor that monitors and adjusts a priming sequence to minimize the accumulation of small air bubbles within a pumping chamber of the cassette. Small air bubbles can be created by the agitation of liquid and air within the cassette during priming, and as a result of changing pressure conditions within the cassette. Adherence of the air bubbles on the walls of the pumping chamber can negatively affect performance of the pump. The microprocessor controls the flow of liquid into the pump cassette from a liquid supply to establish a layer of liquid at the bottom of the air trap, thereby preventing air bubbles within the air trap from moving into the pumping chamber. The layer of liquid acts as a one-way valve, allowing air to rise up from the pumping chamber and pass through the liquid layer into the air trap, but preventing air from passing through the liquid layer and down into the pumping chamber. The microprocessor then back primes the cassette until air is removed from the proximal liquid line connecting the liquid supply to the cassette. At that point, liquid is pumped from the liquid supply to forward prime the cassette until air is removed from the pumping chamber and a distal liquid line.
