    • Disclosed are an apparatus and method for making a sheave by forming an external annular radial groove in the periphery of a circular workpiece. The apparatus includes a support for supporting the workpiece for rotation about its own axis. At least one groove-forming tool having a working surface for extending radially into the periphery of the workpiece is carried by a tool guide adjacent the support for movement past the workpiece in a path such that the outer extremity of the working surface passes generally tangentially to the locus of the bottom of the groove to be formed. A tool drive assembly is provided for moving the tool in such path. A pair of drive rollers are mounted on the support for rotation about respective axes disposed angularly with respect to the axis of the workpiece and having respective opposed drive surfaces for engagement with opposite sides of the workpiece distal its axis. Drive mechanisms are provided for rotating the rollers about their respective axes and also moving them generally radially outwardly with respect to the workpiece toward the working surface of the tool.

    • A method of forming sheaves of the type used in moving and guiding wire in wiremills. A sheet steel blank is freely rotatably carried on an arbor between two driven forming rollers and the rollers have peripheral edges which, when the rollers are forced toward the blank form an initial groove and progressively deepen the groove and spread the lips bounding the groove, while polishing and hardening the groove surfaces. The machine includes an arbor for freely rotatably holding a blank for the sheave, carriages for holding forming rollers and motor means for driving the rollers, and means for forcing the rollers into the blank which is disposed therebetween.

    • A method of making a dynamically balanced V-grooved sheet metal pulley from a flat sheet metal disc by roller spinning and splitting tools. The disc is provided with a central hole for mounting the disc on rotating die means between first headstock and tailstock die form assemblies of a spinning machine. The spinning tool presses the disc against an end of a headstock die form and moves generally radially outwardly pressing a portion of the die against the end of the die to provide a circular hub wall. The spinning tool then moves in a series of passes along the headstock die form thereby rolling, forming and ironing the rotating outer metal portions of the disc against the die and forming an axially extending cylindrical side wall terminating in a radially outwardly extending annular flange of a cup-shaped stage blank. The flange then is trimmed to a predetermined length and to form a peripheral axially extending edge on the flange. The cup-shaped blank then is transferred to and clamped between second headstock and tailstock die form assemblies. The clamped cup-shaped blank is rotated and splitting roll means splits the peripheral edge of the annular flange by exerting radial pressure thereon to form a rough V-shaped groove in the flange. Finishing roll means then move radially into the rough V-shaped groove and forms a finished V-shaped pulley groove. Alternately, the spinning tool may thin the metal in the cylindrical side wall during the forming of the cup-shaped stage blank, whereby the finished pulley has a thicker reinforced circular end wall for receiving a hub than the thinned cylindrical side wall.

    • This disclosure relates to a novel hub or bearing housing, pulley, and the like and to the method of fabricating such hub or bearing housings, grooved metal pulleys, and the like in which a hub flange forming the housing is formed from a one-piece metal disk utilizing metal-splitting techniques. The disk is provided with an inner opening in its central portion and is held between a pair of die members between the inner opening and its outer diameter thereby leaving the inner opening free so that the disk may be split and expanded toward the die. Flanges formed on the inner diameter of the die are shaped to receive and form a hub or bearing housing in the disk as the material is split and expanded toward the die. In another embodiment of the invention, a pulley groove and bearing housing are formed from a one-piece metal disk in a simultaneous splitting operation. Flanges on the inner and outer diameters of a pair of cooperating die members are shaped to receive and form a hub or bearing housing about the inner diameter while simultaneously receiving and forming the rim or pulley groove about the outer diameter of the disk.

    • A machine for forming pulleys from a disc shaped metal blank in which the blank is clamped between two rotating backer blocks and one or more tool means are used to split the periphery of the disc shaped blank and to press the flanges formed by the split laterally to form a belt groove. Each backer block contains an annular resilient member adjacent the periphery on the surface facing the opposite backer block. The resilient members permit the pulleys to be formed from material having wide tolerances with respect to material thickness without changing the critical dimensions on the belt groove or resulting in eccentric or wobbly pulley structures.
