    • A method and apparatus for forming a flat circular disc of metal having a central opening therein into a sheave of the type having an annular peripheral groove for receiving a wire line therein, the size and shape of said groove corresponding to the diameter of said wire line; the disc has two flat side portions separated by the width of said disc and an outer diameter slightly larger than the outer diameter of the sheave to be produced; the apparatus by which the method of the present invention is carried out includes a pair of rotatable holding members rotatable on a common horizontal axis, means for moving the holders axially relatively towards and away from each other whereby when the holders are moved axially towards each other, the holders will engage the disc therebetween; each holder is provided with a hub portion facing towards the other holder concentric with the common horizontal axis and adapted to be received in the central opening of said disc; a rotatable forming roller is rotatable on an axis substantially parallel with the common horizontal axis and movable in a direction substantially at right angles to the common horizontal axis and into contact with the outer periphery of said disc, the portion of said forming roller contacting the disc having a convex shape corresponding to the size and shape of said groove and contacting the disc on the outer periphery thereof at a position substantially equidistant from the flat side portions thereof; means are provided for rotating said rotatable holding members; means are provided for heating the flat side portions of said disc adjacent said periphery; and means are provided for urging said roller continuously against said periphery of said disc during the heating thereof until said roller forms said groove in the periphery of said disc.

    • An apparatus for making grooved wheels includes a metal blank feeder and a forming mechanism for forming grooves in the metal blanks. The feeder includes a retaining means for retaining a supply of metal blanks and a mechanism for feeding the blanks from the supply into position so that the forming mechanism can work thereon. The forming mechanism includes tools which split the peripheral edge of the metal blank while the blank is being rotated. The feeding mechanism operates to eject a completed grooved wheel from the forming mechanism while positioning another metal blank to be formed in the forming mechanism.

    • The invention relates to a method for the manufacture of a gear part with a transversely directed profile, particularly a timing belt pulley, wherein a substantially rotationally symmetrical workpiece is fixed in a flow-forming device and rotated and wherein at least one profiled flow-forming tool is infed to a circumferential area of the workpiece such that a transversely directed profile is formed. According to the invention, prior to the forming of the transversely directed profile, the circumferential area of the workpiece is provided with at least one circumferentially directed groove and the transversely directed profile is formed axially on either side of the at least one groove. The invention also relates to a gear part, particularly a timing belt pulley, which has a substantially rotationally symmetrical construction and a circumferential area and which is provided with a transversely directed profile. According to the invention, the circumferential area has at least one substantially circumferentially directed groove, the transversely directed profile being positioned axially on either side of the groove.

    • An apparatus for manufacturing split pulleys includes a frame and a spindle assembly supported by the frame and having an upper and lower spindle for supporting for rotation a blank to be split therebetween. The lower spindle includes a clamping mechanism having a screw means for drawing the upper spindle toward the lower spindle and the lower spindle toward the upper spindle to clamp the blank to be split therebetween. Bearing means are disposed between the frame and the spindle assembly for supporting the spindle assembly for rotation. The clamping means are operative to exert a clamping force between the upper and lower spindles which is isolated from the frame and the bearing means to clamp a blank therebetween. A pair of rotatable tools are provided each of which has an axis of rotation parallel to the axis of rotation of the spindle assembly and each of which is associated with a motor means to effect rotation of the tools. The tools are operable to move relative to the blank supported by the spindle assembly to effect sequential engagement between the tools and the peripheral edge of the blank to sequentially split and form the blank. Control means is provided for controlling the speed of the spindle to match the peripheral speed of the rotating blank supported by the spindle with the peripheral speed of the tool with which it is desired to engage the blank. The control means senses the speed of the first tool to be engaged with the rotating blank and controls the speed of the spindle in response to the speed of the first tool and subsequently senses the speed of the second tool to be engaged with the blank and controls the speed of the spindle in response to the speed of the second tool. The speed control of the peripheral speed of the tools and the rotating blank prevents skidding of the tools upon initial engagement of the blank with the tools.

    • This invention relates to a novel hub or bearing housing, pulley, and the like and to the method of fabricating such hub or bearing housings, grooved metal pulleys, and the like in which a hub flange forming the housing is formed from a one-piece metal disk utilizing metal-splitting techniques. The disk is provided with an inner opening in its central portion and is held between a pair of die members between the inner opening and its outer diameter thereby leaving the inner opening free so that the disk may be split and expanded toward the die. Flanges formed on the inner diameter of the die are shaped to receive and form a hub or bearing housing in the disk as the material is split and expanded toward the die. In another embodiment of the invention, a pulley groove and bearing housing are formed from a one-piece metal disk in a simultaneous splitting operation. Flanges on the inner and outer diameters of a pair of cooperating die members are shaped to receive and form a hub or bearing housing about the inner diameter while simultaneously receiving and forming the rim or pulley groove about the outer diameter of the disk.
