    • A transfer device for an image forming machine has a belt unit including a driving roller, a driven roller disposed at a distance from the driving roller, a transfer belt looped between the driving roller and the driven roller, and a transfer roller disposed opposite an image bearing member with the transfer belt interposed therebetween; a contacting/separating device for moving the belt unit between a transfer position and a non-transfer position; and a voltage source for applying a predetermined voltage onto the transfer roller. The transfer roller is disposed apart from the transfer belt, and when the belt unit is brought to the transfer position by the contacting/separating device, the transfer roller presses the transfer belt against the image bearing member. Another embodiment includes a cleaning blade disposed apart from the transfer belt, and which in the transfer position contacts the transfer belt.

    • The invention provides novel compounds useful as intermediates for the production of polymethine compounds containing a desired counter ion with high purity and in high yields.Thus provided are polymethine ether compounds of the general formula (I) given below and a method of producing polymethine compounds which comprises bringing those compounds into contact with an acid. In the above formula, R represents an alkyl group, an alkoxyalkyl group or an aryl group which may optionally be substituted, R1 and R2 each independently represents a hydrogen atom, halogen atom, nitro group, alkyl group, alkoxyalkyl group, alkoxy group or alkoxyalkoxy group and R1 and R2 may be bound to each other to form a ring; R3 represents an alkyl group, which may optionally be substituted; L is an alkylene group required for the formation of a ring structure; and X represents a hydrogen atom, halogen atom, alkoxy group, aryloxy group, alkylthio group, arylthio group or substituted amino group.

    • An image forming apparatus includes a belt-shaped image carrier adapted to support a toner image: a transfer roller; a contact/separation mechanism, operable to bring the transfer roller into contact with the image carrier to transfer the toner image from the image carrier onto a recording medium and operable to separate the transfer roller from the image carrier after the toner image is transferred onto the recording medium; and a rotation applier, operable to apply a first rotation to the transfer roller in a state that the transfer roller is separated from the image carrier. The rotation applier and the transfer roller are mechanically separated from each other when the transfer roller is in contact with the image carrier. When the contact/separation mechanism brings the transfer roller into contact with the image carrier, a circumferential speed of the transfer roller is made coincident with a circumferential speed of the image carrier.
