    • A variable displacement piston pump of the type in which the hydraulic pressure in a pressure chamber of an output flow variable element is controlled by a proportional electro-hydraulic control valve to control the displacement of the variable element against a spring to vary the output flow within a range between a maximum output flow and a full cut-off and the output pressure or both the output pressure and the output flow of the pump are controlled electro-hydraulically through a closed loop. The variable displacement piston pump includes flow detector for generating an electric signal corresponding to the output flow of the pump, pressure detector for generating an electric signal corresponding to the output flow of the pump, and control amplifier responsive to the difference between a flow setting signal and the output signal of the flow detector to control a driving control current supplied to the proportional electro-hydraulic control valve and also responsive to the detected output pressure reaching a predetermined value to control the driving control signal in accordance with the difference between a pressure setting signal and the output signal of the pressure detector.

    • A method of manufacturing spherical alumina comprising preparing a basic aluminum chloride solution having an aluminum concentration in the range of from 7 wt.% to 12 wt.% and a weight ratio of aluminum to chloride in the range of from 0.3 to 0.8 by reacting gibbsite with an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution at an elevated temperature, preparing an alumina hydrosol having an aluminum concentration in the range of from 9 wt.% to 15 wt.% and a weight ratio of aluminum to chloride in the range of from 0.8 to 1.5 by reacting the thus prepared solution with metallic aluminum at an elevated temperature, commingling this hydrosol with a gelling agent, dispersing the resulting mixture in the form of droplets in a suspending medium thereby to form hydrogel particles, ageing the thus obtained particles in said suspending medium and then an aqueous ammonia, washing with water, drying and calcining. The thus obtained spherical alumina is substantially free from sodium in spite of employing gibbsite as raw material.

    • A hydraulic pump with a built-in electric motor wherein an electric motor and a pump unit are arranged in tandem fashion and accommodated within a common housing. In this pump, the housing is in the form of a metal box having a rectangular parallelepiped external shape and forms an electric motor frame fixedly accommodating a stator of the electric motor therein. A space in the metal box on the electric motor side is separated as a dry space from an internal space of said pump unit by a seal mechanism. At least one hydraulic oil receiving chamber is formed in a peripheral wall of the metal box, and the hydraulic oil receiving chamber is communicated with a passage for receiving return oil externally and another passage communicating with a suction port of the pump unit. The pump is capable of simultaneously achieving the cooling of a built-in electric motor and the prevention of contamination of hydraulic oil due to the rotation of the electric motor, without any possibility of electrical troubles with the built-in electric motor even if a water-containing hydraulic oil or aqueous hydraulic oil is fed and discharged.
