    • An implantable medical device, such as a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), is configured to automatically detect ingestion of medications to verify that prescribed medications are taken in a timely manner and at the correct dosage. Briefly, individual pills are provided with miniature radio frequency identification (RFID) devices capable of transmitting RFID tag signals, which identify the medication contained within the pill and its dosage. The implanted device is equipped with an RFID transceiver for receiving tag signals from a pill as it is being ingested. The implanted system decodes the tag to identify the medication and its dosage, then accesses an onboard database to verify that the medication being ingested was in fact prescribed to the patient and to verify that the correct dosage was taken. Warning signals are generated if the wrong medication or the wrong dosage was taken. Therapy may also be automatically adjusted. Non-RF-based ID devices are also described, which instead transmit ID data via biphasic current pulses.

    • A method and apparatus for treating an arrhythmia is provided. The method includes the steps of: (a) sensing at least one electrical signal from the patient's heart; (b) calculating a frequency spectrum of each electrical signal; (c) calculating a center frequency for each frequency spectrum; and (d) selecting an electro-therapy for delivery to the patient's heart based on the center frequency. The electro-therapy can be a pre-programmed anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) therapy, a shock therapy, or no therapy at all. The method is performed through the use of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Also provided is a method of determining the optimal location to deliver the electro-therapy.

    • Techniques are provided for generating pre-pulse pain inhibition (PPI) pulses and subsequent main cardioversion shocks. The PPI pulses are relatively low-voltage pulses each having a chevron-shaped waveform. The main shocks are relatively high-voltage shocks each having a plateau-shaped waveform. By employing plateau-shaped waveforms for the main shocks, a greater cardiac membrane response can be achieved at an equivalent peak voltage as compared to conventional shock waveforms. Peak voltage is a significant contributor to pain caused by cardioversion shocks. Hence, by using the plateau-shaped waveform, pain reduction can be achieved without loss of shock effectiveness. Moreover, by employing chevron-shaped PPI pulses in combination with plateau-shaped main shocks, a relatively simple shocking circuit having a single high-voltage shocking capacitor may be used, thus eliminating the need for both low-voltage PPI capacitors and higher voltage main shock capacitors. The shocking circuit includes a low-pass resistive-capacitive filter.
