    • In a long base line interferometer system for determining the position of a transmitter, the phase differences between the signal received by the antennas at each end of the base line are monitored as the interferometer moves through a measurement path to obtain phase difference measurements distributed along the measurement path. A cost function involving measuring the sum of the squares of the differences between measured values and predicted values is determined for each of a set of trial location grid points and the grid point with the lowest cost function is selected as a starting point for determining the transmitter location by least squares convergence. In evaluating the cost function, the predicted values are obtained from the equation: ##EQU1## in which .o slashed..sub.0 is unknown phase offset and the X and Y coordinates of the transmitter are unknown. The least squares convergence is carried out by iteratively adding corrections to predicted values for the unknowns until convergence occurs.

    • A curbside check-in counter includes a cabinet unit that can be moved from place to place in a transportation terminal while still retaining features that permit a passenger to complete his or her check-in procedure in a manner similar to that carried out at a main check-in position. The check-in counter has a scale unit that is connected to a computer in the unit so baggage can be weighed, and any excess baggage charges noted and assessed. The scale unit can be stored beneath the check-in counter when not in use. The check-in counter further includes compartments for a printer as well as displays for flight information. The cabinet unit further includes compartments for heating and air conditioning systems, as well as trash bins, cash drawers, control panel compartments, and compartments for other units associated with the counter.

    • An improved row crop cultivator for use in minimum tillage applications is described. A plurality of ganged cultivating units are mounted on a tool bar adapted to be towed behind a tractor vehicle. Each cultivating unit comprises a frame which is supported on a pair of spaced-apart gauge wheels. Also mounted on the frame for rotation within the gap between the gauge wheels is a disk-shaped coulter blade which is configured to cut through crop residue and weed debris as the material being cut is held against the ground surface by the gauge wheels. This arrangement tends to prevent improper cutting known as "hair-pinning". Trailing directly behind the coulter blade is a middleworker comprising a narrow width shank depending from the frame and having a weld point on its lower leading edge and wing-like share blades flaring rearwardly and outwardly at a predetermined angle from the lower end of the shank. The middleworker design reduces the tendency for slabs of earth to be thrown onto and thereby damaging growing row crops.

    • The planter includes a number of forward tillage units each followed by an aligned planting unit. Both units are independently mounted by four-bar linkages to the planter frame. Each tillage unit includes a leading banded coulter followed by a pair of rolling row cleaning discs which are, in turn, followed by a fluted coulter. The system may be used in any of the following planting modes: (1) no-till planting, in which the fluted coulter only is used to prepare a narrow band of soil for planting with no trash removal; (2) ridge planting or till-planting, in which the row cleaning discs clear a deeper wide band before the fluted coulter while leaving bands between the row crops untilled; (3) minimum tillage planting, in which the row cleaning discs may be used to clear a shallow band of surface trash before the fluted coulter; and (4) conventional planting, in which the tillage units are raised and not used. Simple field adjustment can quickly convert the system to any of these plow modes as field conditions require. In each of the first three modes, an adjustable weight may be used to set the weight on the tillage units.

Transmitter activation may be shown by coupling the push-to-talk circuit to the decimal point display. More specifically, the character display module is oriented to be viewed with the decimal point portion in a superscript position relative to the character.A method for visually indicating the operational status of a radio transmitter includes the steps of providing a character display module having an integral decimal point, generating a signal indicative of a transmit circuit condition, and activating the decimal point display in response to the indicative signal. The indicative signal may be a transmitter activation signal obtained from a push-to-talk circuit or it may be a signal indicating percentage amplitude modulation of the transmit signal. The method also includes the step of orienting the character display module such that it may be viewed with the decimal point portion in a superscript position with respect to the character.
