    • A digital monitor/analyzer for an ac electrical power system samples the current and voltage waveforms at a slow rate for performing metering functions, and at a high rate for analyzing harmonic content. Sampling is performed in sampling frames comprising a plurality of repetitions of sampling for a selected number of cycles followed by a delay of a fraction of a cycle. This effects equivalent sampling at a higher rate for slow speed sampling over a frame. High speed sampling is performed over only one repetition of the selected number of cycles in a frame so that it can be carried out sychronously as required for the harmonic analysis. The high speed sampling rate is an integer multiple of the slow speed rate so that slow speed data can be extracted from the high speed samples for continuous metering. Fourier analysis of the harmonic content of the waveforms is performed on the odd interrupts while all of the other tasks are apportioned out over the even interrupts of a sampling frame. Both the odd and even interrupts initiate sampling.

    • Apparatus for measuring current over a wide range generates an eight bit accurate, 16-bit dynamic range digital signal from a current transformer secondary. Two signals proportional to the rectified secondary current, one generated by a large burden resistor and the other by an amplifier with programmable gain and an overrange indication, are applied through a multiplexer to an eight bit analog to digital converter which has three selectable reference voltages. A microprocessor selects the input signal, converter reference voltage, and one of four levels of amplifier gain which provide the greatest resolution for the magnitude of the current being measured, and provides an appropriate scale factor, from 2.sup.0 to 2.sup.8, for the eight bit accurate digital signal generated by the analog to digital converter.

    • A solid-state load protection system whereby a poly-phase alternating current system is monitored enabling a loss of phase feature to be used. A current sensing function is utilized so as to produce an output signal which is related to the current in an electrical circuit. Attached to the current sensing function are two capacitors each having their own signal path so as to have different charging and discharging rates. During a loss of phase condition, one capacitor discharges more quickly than the remaining capacitor with the result that the voltage across the quickly discharging capacitor, which during normal conditions is greater than the remaining capacitor, now becomes less than the remaining capacitor. A loss of phase sensing function detects this difference in potential levels thereby initiating a trip signal to the output function. The output function upon receiving a trip signal causes a light-emitting diode to conduct and also deenergizes a contactor through which a current source is connected to the load.

    • Variable inductance ballast apparatus for high-intensity discharge (HID) lamp comprises a laminated E-I core having non-magnetic gaps intermediate the E-conformed and I-conformed members. A main winding is carried on a leg of the E-conformed member to provide two closed magnetic paths. A control winding is wrapped about another of the legs and encircles only one of the closed magnetic paths. A bilateral switch connects to the control winding and is actuated by a signal-generating means which is responsive to a lamp operating condition to close the bilateral switch once each half cycle of energizing potential during normal lamp operation, with the resulting counter mmf decreasing the inductance of the ballast apparatus by a predetermined amount to control in a very accurate, simple and inexpensive fashion the average power delivered to the lamp.

    • Outdoor lighting fixture utilizes lamp ballast which includes both solid-state control circuitry and a relatively massive inductor ballast. The solid-state control circuitry is mounted in a separate housing, such as the photocontrol housing, which is affixed to the exterior of the fixture by means of a plug-type receptacle, and the relatively massive inductor portion of the ballast is contained within the fixture body. Those portions of the solid-state control circuitry which require cooling use the separate housing as a heat sink. If troubles are encountered in the solid-state circuitry, the entire circuit can be replaced simply by plugging in a new unit.
