    • A protection circuit is provided which incorporates a reed relay whose contacts form the circuit breaker of an electrical appliance. The winding of the reed relay is supplied with a rectified alternating current derived from a current transformer coupled to the supply line to the appliance. In order to avoid periods of zero current in the winding, the winding is also supplied with a rectified alternating current from a source which is out of phase with that supplying the supply line. Failure of the current on the line will cause the contacts to open. Preferably the relay has a set of self latching contacts to prevent re-energization of the winding once de-energized. A manually operable reset switch is provided in series with the self latching contacts.

    • Complete protection of a three-phase submersible pump motor, such as the type used downhole in an oil well, is obtained with a solid state digital logic control system that monitors each of the three phase currents and shuts the pump motor down if any of those phase currents indicates either an underload or overload condition. Time delays are introduced before shutdown to avoid undesired nuisance shutdowns otherwise caused by transient or momentary conditions. When the pump motor is de-energized in response to an underload condition, it is automatically restarted after a predetermined time delay. All of the delay functions are precisely determined by division of the power line frequency. Downhole pressure and temperature are also sensed and if they become excessive the motor is automatically de-energized to prevent overheating. The presence of an auxiliary physical condition, such as filling up a retaining tank, also causes the pump motor to be turned off.

    • According to the invention a transducer coupled to a three phase AC supply for a load provides three trains overlapping voltage waveforms displaced 120* in time and of phase sequence following the supply sequence. A waveform converter converts these voltage waveforms into three trains of square waveforms of the same repetition rate, substantially the same duration, and displaced 120* in time but overlapping in duration. The square waveforms are then impressed on a wye circuit configuration consisting of a resistor and a gate controlled semiconductor connected in series and to the wye point in that order for each leg. Each semiconductor is gated on upon its anode going positive by another waveform which is of gating polarity and overlaps the positive going anode waveform. During normal three phase operation of the load, the positive voltages on the anodes of the semiconductor are substantially zero. During reversal or loss of phase of the load, these voltages are no longer zero and are detected by a detector circuit which signals the presence of the fault.

    • A compressor protector system for externally monitoring the internal temperature of a compressor motor by monitoring the level of the current supplied to the motor and for discontinuing the supply of voltage to the motor when the current level is above or below a desired range of levels for a predetermined period of time. The compressor protector system may also directly monitor high temperature conditions within the compressor and a single phasing condition of the three-phase supply to the compressor motor so as to discontinue the supply of voltage under such high temperature or single phasing conditions. The compressor protector system automatically rechecks after a predetermined period of time to determine if the particular fault which resulted in a continuing of the voltage supply has cleared and then automatically restarts the compressor if the fault has cleared. The system also prevents short cycling in that once the compressor has been turned off it cannot be restarted until after a predetermined period of time.
